After "don't believe everything the TV tells you", we couldn't even graduate from "don't believe everything you see on the Internet" before we have to learn "don't believe everything an AI chatbot tells you".

AI, ORALITY, AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF GRIFT In today's newsletter, I go back to Ong-posting to try to answer the question of why grift is so out in the open these days. Why don't people feel shame and the impulse to obfuscate? Why don't other people react more judgmentally?

Something about this feels sinister on a deep level I can't really articulate. Niche internet weirdos like Taylor Lorenz were the last bastion of sincerity in modern America, and if even she's been absorbed by the sponsorship grift machine, it might truly be over
Rachel Cohen Booth@rcobooth

@mindyisser Call me old fashioned but I think Taylor doing paid ads for companies that try to get kids as young as six in front of phones is relevant info tiktok.com/t/ZPHGAE54EpCG…

He's trying desperately to thread the needle by making this about "foreigners," as if the entire conservative political movement will choose classic hand-drawn illustration over Silicon Valley tech billionaires if he just asks racistly enough. It's sad but also very very funny.

something i've been thinking about...lots of institutions, either volunteer-run organizations or the school system, got a kind of subsidy from women who would today be lawyers, executives etc working in them, now they have to compete for their time in a real labor market

This guy is a political commentator on a British cable news channel. That tells you everything about the quality of the chattering class.

Unbelievably ignorant. Buchanan worked in two white houses, was a constant presence on TV, and a syndicated columnist. He represented a right-wing critique of neoliberalism and foreign interventionism that won out (partially) with Trump.

Akshually Italy is an export-oriented, high-tech manufacturing economy that even by economists' standards is larger than the UK's despite a smaller population. Italy is a major machine tool exporter. Tesla got its giga-presses from a boutique Italian firm outside of Milan.

as I've said many times, we have a simultaneous problem of underpolicing and overpolicing. When I used to live in Trinidad in DC, there would be cop cars just sitting around watching people, but if you called the cops for any reason, it would be like 45 minutes before anyone responded.
Welp!@kkvolt

@janecoaston I think there could be a better effort in cities (neighborhoods) where crime is rampant, to focus on the small percentage of criminals who commit the majority of violent crimes. Keeping them locked up would go a long way in protecting innocent citizens in those areas.
