Getting testimonials is a great way to build your personal brand. Ask clients for one and make it a standard part of your process.

There’s no such thing as universal advice for freelancers. But, if there was… what would make the list?

I have a *rare* space to take on one new client from next month. If you are (or know someone who is) looking for a freelance writer that: ⚡️Writes about ecommerce marketing, and the creator economy ⚡️Has lived experience of all three (owning an ecom store and a community) ⚡️Written for Shopify, Descript, Business Insider, CXL, and more ⚡️Writes SEO-optimized content with lots of product tie-ins ⚡️Has never missed a deadline in almost 7 years ...and more importantly, gets glowing results like this 👇 let me know!

Interesting preliminary data coming from our "State of Hiring Freelancers" report 👇 Clients value how easy a freelancer is to work with more than the results they drive. (Freelancers: this is why meeting deadlines and proactive communication are bigger competitive advantages than writing quality.) We still need a lot more responses before we can draw more accurate trends and publish the data. So, if you're a content manager that actively hires freelance writers, please take 5 minutes to help us out: forms.gle/9GNDt5r5aVvWbx…

My 30,000 feet office is unreal. I always find it hard to work on planes due to my height and being in a cramped workspace. I’ve always found what’s on offer by major airlines business class underwhelming and never forked out for it. But JetBlue is 👌 + they have oat milk!

Freelance February Day 8 Don’t get hung up on finding “freelance tools” - you rarely need anything like this. I use Google Docs, FreeAgent, and a whiteboard for the most part. What tools do you genuinely get ROI on as a freelancer?

👋🏻 Here's your periodic reminder: Don't send your client your original Google Doc. They don't need to see your revision history (or how long something took you).

@rawlinsonwrites Just did the same. Basically £150 a year to cover a max of £30k salary after the first year of illness. Assuming I can pay via my company, it’s a tax deductible payment worth taking out.

Freelancers, do you have income protection insurance for critical illness? As well as having savings, I took out a policy when I started my business over 2 years ago, covering an estimated income. This figure is now underestimated. Remember to update your policy annually to match your current earnings.

@DomKent It can be either a % of your annual income or lump sum payout. I used a comparison website to play around with the level of cover, premium and understand some of the qualifying criteria.

@rawlinsonwrites I don’t have this and have no idea how much it would cost. Is it a % of your earnings based on last year or something?

Freelancers: some things you just have to learn the hard way. But let's help the newbies out. Reply with: 1. Your years of experience 2. Your rates when you started vs your rates now 3. The one thing that made the biggest difference in your business

@rawlinsonwrites Grammarly is getting significantly worse over time. I tend to just use it to point out issues now and entirely ignore its suggestions. Might be time to cancel.
