Love this. Much relevance between the “finite” and “infinite” player. The infinite player is what the greatest classical musicians aspire to be. Only then can you call yourself an “artist”. It is however extremely counter-intuitive. To change from rule-following to rule-bending/breaking in a judgmental world is terrifying and requires such an outsider perspective mentality that most people in the field would rather label it “egotistical”. I’ll never forget the dreaded question: “Do you think you know better than Bach/Beethoven/X famous composer?” Well - I am confident I do know one thing better, and that is: I understand the audience (of today) that I’m playing for.
