Felipe Alou's Merits for Induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame
We are motivated to highlight the reasons why we believe our sporting legend has sufficient merit to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Merits as a Player
Felipe Alou was the first Dominican player to establish himself regularly in Major League Baseball (1958-1974).
Felipe was also the first Dominican position player selected to the All-Star Game in the Majors in 1962.
Alou was selected to the All-Star Game three times (1962, 1966, and 1968).
Managerial Achievements
Felipe rose from hitting coach in 1976 to manager of the Montreal Expos (1992-2001) and the San Francisco Giants in 2003.
As a manager, he had a brilliant career, accumulating 1,033 wins and finishing among the top contenders for Manager of the Year three times.
Furthermore, Felipe Alou is only the fourth man with more than 1,000 wins as a manager and 200 home runs as a player, joining Frank Robinson (1,065 wins – 586 home runs), Joe Torre (2,326 wins – 252 home runs), and Dusty Baker (1,863 wins – 242 home runs).
Without a doubt, of the 11 Latin American managers who have regularly held that position in the Major Leagues, Felipe Alou's career has been the most outstanding.
His Legacy, Impact, and Significance
While his achievements in baseball were undeniable, it is equally true that many of them were accomplished under the oppressive weight of the Jim Crow laws of the South, and the racial prejudices of the era, where being Black, Latino, and poor seemed to close off any possibility of success for any ordinary person.
The result demonstrates that he was no ordinary man.
His gallantry, courage, and desire to triumph in a completely unforgiving environment were greater than all those obstacles.
His sportsmanship makes him deserving of the highest honor among Latinos, and he should be a symbol worthy of being preserved, celebrated, and remembered.
Mentor of Hall of Fame Immortals
Felipe Alou has been the principal mentor of players who are now members of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, such as Pedro Martínez and Vladimir Guerrero.
