Just found out that Saudis are basically following the method of astronomical calculation found in Judaism. We know the Saudis abandoned moon sighting long ago due to their annual “we saw the moon!” lies, instead of openly admitting to precalculation as their method.

Nobody saw the moon last night, not even Saudi. For people who follow calculations, fasting starts on Wednesday. For people who follow local/global sighting, fasting begins on Thursday. But nobody saw the moon last night in its appropriate time, even the Fiqh Council in America who solely follows calculations and NOT sighting, said it is impossible to be seen anywhere on earth, but they will follow calculations so it didn’t matter to them.

If you’re a Muslim that has no access yourself to outside, and another Muslim comes and informs you of the prayer times, such as by saying ‘Maghreb has entered’ — you must act on his testimony and pray Maghreb, because you have no access to outside yourself (such as if you’re in a jail). Now what about if he tells you this at 3:30pm, whereas you look on your phone and see that scientifically Maghreb comes in at 5:30pm. Do you believe his word, or confirmed science? If you take his word, you’re disregarding the methodology Allah laid out for us, when He said He created the sun and moon so that you may know the number of years and calculations of time. If you take science — as you should — then you are inconsistent to not apply it here. Here, you have people saying ‘we saw the moon’ when scientifically the moon was not in a position to be seen. Therefore his testimony is rejected, and if we don’t say it is a lie, then it was a mistake — he saw something he believed to be the moon, but it was not the moon. There is no way to logically and textually justify blind-following a person who says the moon has been sighted, when you have a way of knowing the truthfulness of that claim yourself. In today’s world, we all have access to it right on our phones. So no, nobody saw the moon.
