Check out this paper, "New OMB’s Race and Ethnicity Standards Will Affect How Americans Self-Identify," in @SociologicalSci coauthored by @rd_flowers. René worked on it while in residence as a 2023-24 CASBS fellow 😏

In 2024, the OMB approved major changes to the ethnic/racial self-identification questions used by all federal agencies, including the Census. Do these changes shape Americans’ ID choices? Edward Telles, @IlanaMVentura, and I address this question: 🧵 sociologicalscience.com/articles-v11-4…

Why did the U.S. multiracial population nearly triple between 2010 and 2020? Did cultural norms around racial identification shift? In a new paper, @IlanaMVentura and I find that this surge is largely due to changes in @uscensusbureau 2020 data processing, esp for Hispanics.
Ilana Ventura, PhD@IlanaMVentura

🚨New paper alert 🚨 The multiracial population in the United States grew 276% between 2010 and 2020, and now represents over 10% of the population. In a new paper out in the @RussellSageFdn Journal, @rd_flowers and I explore this sudden boom: 🧵 doi.org/10.7758/RSF.20…

Excited to share my first published article in @SREJournal! Through a legal case in 🇪🇨, I show how Indigenous communities play an active role redefining what it means to be Indigenous, expanding the Indigenous-mestizo boundary, and furthering their rights. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/23…

Super valuable new study that randomly assigns 7k+ Americans to old vs. new Census race formats. Among many interesting patterns: 1. White & "some other race" %'s ⬇️ by 6 and 4 pts. 2. No change in overall Hisp and Black %'s. 3. Small but detectable ⬇️ Black + Hisp responses.

This results in statistically significant decreases in key minority populations, including Afro-Latinos and indigenous Latinos (5/5). @SociologicalSci @ASAnews

We find that the combined question decreases the % of Americans identifying as white & as some other race. We ID the key mechanism driving the effects: Hispanics decrease their identification in other categories when a Hispanic category is available in the combined q format (4/5)

@RobbWiller @tabeanaujoks Aargh, bummed we missed this reference. Would’ve gladly cited it. Our piece instead is a love letter to Blumer. I would argue his classic piece on minority threat is one of best soc articles ever. We’ve also cite a lot of great soc consistent with this by e.g. @rd_flowers et al

Our new @AMJPublicHealth editorial with Ariela Schachter @ArielaSchachter and Neda Maghbouleh @nedasoc on the need to collect and disaggregate self-Identification data for Middle Eastern and North African Americans. #MENA
UBC Sociology@UBCSociology

A new @AMJPublicHealth editorial by Prof. @nedasoc highlights how the absence of a #MENA category in federal data has hidden disparities within the community, making the collection of self-identified data key to addressing health & social inequalities. buff.ly/3NVNjF3

Thrilled to see my paper with @patrickpliu in the APSR! We address a crucial question in political psychology — whether persuasive attempts targeting deeply held issues cause attitudes to grow more extreme or encourage moderation — using tailored AI-powered surveys.
