POCA Reads Reading night happening now. Families are having fun celebrating our book#PocaPreK5

English

@michvoorhees I think you were smart for not doing logs. It isn’t authentic Ps say they just sign it. We need to focus on creating the desire and love of reading Then Ss will want to read at home
English

Q4: I abandoned home reading logs years ago - nothing but a chore for Ss & parents. Ss have choice over their independent reading, within guidelines. When Ss read books they enjoy, they will read at home. I do a status of the class daily to keep up with their rdg. #DLT21_DT3

Q6. I think some teachers hold on to the same things because it is easier and safer. They fear failing and don’t want to try a new strategy or text. It is also easier to pull out plans you have done before. I love mixing it up. Otherwise it is boring #DLT21_DT3
English

@MsTothsClass @English_Tchr101 I like your thought on this. You’re right not all students read a book the same way.
English

@English_Tchr101 Q1: read the same book but don’t expect all students to read it the same way. Also, one on one or conduct small group conferences. And, give students a voice and choice when choosing the book. #DLT21_DT3
English

Q3. Starting a year with a common read helped us set routines and procedures for small groups. We all read the same book, but our interactions with it were different as were my scaffolds. If doing a common read students need time to choose books for read to self #DLT21_DT3
English

Q2. I think there is a time and place for both. I have used both in my classrooms, sometimes simultaneously. Having choice is important especially when it comes to reading. #DLT21_DT3

Interactive read-aloud: What is it? Why is it important? And what does it look like in the classroom? Find out in our newest blog post on "What Is Interactive Read-Aloud?" hubs.ly/H0gkVGK0 #FPLiteracy #fountasandpinnell #literacy

@michvoorhees I love this too. They need to learn to respond and react to their reading but still love to read. I can’t wait to try some of these ideas in classrooms.
English

A1:I love the BHH framework, because I think it will help Ss THINK more. They aren't just reading to answer a question; they are thinking about what is in the text, what they think about it, and how it affects them. And kids will connect with the simple BHH format. #pcpschatdt2
English

@michvoorhees Totally agree. We want them to live those books. I carry many stories around with me for years. Love when a book does that.
English

A2: When Ss discuss & write about how a text changed them, that text will "live" with them; they will remember it. It also helps them to see a purpose in reading; they will see how powerful it is. I try to share how books/words have affected me whenever possible. #pcpschatdt2

@MrsInnerb @English_Tchr101 Do you (or others) encourage students to respond to independent reading through writing during stations? The accountability/share piece is what I always find difficult when students reflect and respond during stations, but that is a great use of that scheduled time! #PCPSChatDT

@porscheteacher3 @English_Tchr101 I have asked that question too. It makes me sad. We need real books and real readers.
English

@English_Tchr101 A2: I've not asked this question. I have asked what would it be like in a world with no libraries or books, only digital books like Kindle?

@MallaryMcevoy @English_Tchr101 I think we have created that type of reader M. Hopefully we can change that mindset and make them more responsive. It takes a village.
English

@English_Tchr101 #PCPSChatDL Yes! I have seen it with my LLI students reading the nf text. Reading about people from past or other cultures and their struggles they relate and feel for them.
English

@English_Tchr101 A4: I think I have been quick to be sucked into fake news in the past. However, recently I have made a conscientious effort to pay attention to details in the articles to determine if it is true or not. I think we owe it to our students to teach them how to be savvy about this
English

@MegEllis1215 @English_Tchr101 I need to come check out a book discussion. Again soon. Let me know when you have one planned.
English

@English_Tchr101 A1- At least weekly! My read alouds are always a book they can connect w/ on a different level. We set the stage with #GRA in Oct. #AmalUnbound brought a ton of emotion. During conferencing about their novel we also discuss their connections / reactions #PCPSChatDT
