I was not born deaf; I became deaf at the age of three. I rarely use my mouth and ears, but I easily use my eyes and hands to do everything you do. I excel at learning through my eyes, allowing me to absorb information visually and understand concepts more effectively. #DeafLife

“As a Deaf student, how did you overcome the challenges of grammatical errors in the English Language?” Learning English as a Deaf student was not easy at all. I do not hear how words are spoken, and English itself does not always make sense. Imagine the word “read” can be pronounced as “reed” or “red” depending on the sentence. How exactly do you expect me to guess that? Honestly, not easy. I am also not good at lip reading, so copying people’s speech was not an option for me. In fact, whenever I tried to speak by copying others, people would laugh at me, and it made me feel discouraged. When I first entered Wesley School, I was shocked to see many Deaf students like me. Before then, I honestly thought I was the only Deaf person in the world. Thank Goodness oo. At first, learning ABC felt useless. I kept repeating letters, but they had no meaning in my brain. What helped me was drawing. I loved pictures, so I started linking words to images. For example, A for Apple, B for Ball. Even my own name, Qudus, I memorized as Queen, Umbrella, Dog, Umbrella, and Snake. The word “School” became Snake, Cat, House, Orange, Orange, Lion. That was how I improved in Primary 1. Lol. I also used this method to communicate with my sister when we were younger, and we understood each other very well. However, many people in my class did not understand that it was just our own random signing, like how children sign today. By Primary 3, I already knew many words, things in the kitchen, names of places, and people, but forming correct grammar was still a big challenge. That was the real struggle. Haha. Then in Primary 4, I found an English book with questions and answers. I cannot remember the exact name because it was many years ago. I kept using it repeatedly until I gradually started forming sentences little by little. Mistakes helped me a lot. Without mistakes, I would be nothing today. I made many wrong sentences, real rotten English, and I was mocked, misunderstood, and ignored. But I did not give up. My sister was good at grammar but did not know many words, while I knew many words but still struggled with grammar. In the end, we both had strengths and weaknesses. I improved by reading books repeatedly, watching TV with subtitles, and practicing writing almost every day. Every mistake became a lesson. Over time, I mastered grammar and made English my friend. My secret is that I understand better when information is written on a whiteboard rather than through sign language alone. For me, sign language gives about 40 percent understanding, while reading and writing complete the remaining 60 percent. So it is not about being Deaf, it is about determination. If you put in the effort, English will eventually surrender. My school and teachers helped me, but that alone was not enough. If I had just sat waiting for English to come to me, I would still be struggling today. I had to be intentional, observing, practicing, making mistakes, and learning from them. Understanding did not come from lessons alone. It came from my own determination to improve. Effort + Consistency = Progress.

I once dated a lady who used crutches. Out of love and genuine care, I bought her a brand new pair as a gift. Her old crutches were broken. The only working pair she had left were the ones I bought her. She was literally walking around on my love and my money every single day. But glory be to God Almighty. I went back and collected my crutches.
