I first got into medieval history because of playing Age of Empires 2. So I thought archers were positioned behind melee troops. You know, because they have range and the melee guys can protect them. How a medieval battle usually worked was the opposite. Archers were out front. Shooting to soften up the enemy, often as a rough skirmish line. Then they would retreat, and the melee guys would advance. But I'm grateful to AoE2 and @SandyofCthulhu for sparking this interest.
