Correction: some of y’all were right, my timeline was off. I remember Drama being protective about his Drake relationship and assumed in my head all these years later it was connected to the Quentin Miller controversy. But that issue surfaced months after If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late dropped. In hindsight, maybe the friction started around IYRTITL and how that played out. Hard to say without Drama breaking it down himself.

STORY TIME: There are a few artists I always felt we could’ve done more with, even if it was just one project. Drake was absolutely one of those guys. He broke out right around the same time DatPiff and mixtape culture were dominating, around ’08–’09, and unofficial DJ tapes like Dj Ill Will & Dj Rampage’s ‘Heartbreak Drake’ series were running wild. Those early tapes helped push Drake from up-and-coming buzzing, to a breakout star in hip-hop. By the time 2015 rolled around, we finally had a shot to work together. At that point, DJ Drama was signed exclusively to us, meaning any Gangsta Grillz he hosted had to be released on our platform. Drake tapped Drama to host ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late’, and I was hyped because it felt like the perfect moment to claim a classic with him. A couple days before the drop, Drama hit me saying it wasn’t happening as planned. Drake (and his lawyers) had re-evaluated his deal with Birdman/Cash Money/Young Money and realized he only owed one more project. Instead of a free Gangsta Grillz tape, he wanted this one to count as a retail release so he could fulfill his contract and clear the way for his next chapter. At first, I was honestly PISSED. I’d been prepping budgets, rollouts, and the surprise campaign behind the scenes. On top of that, media had already caught wind of the rumors of It releasing with us. So when Complex (and others) happened to reach out just as I was finding out about the change, I leaked the details. The news broke everywhere before Drake or his team could announce anything. Drama was fuming and blowing up my phone because this was right after he’d just rebuilt his relationship with OVO following old tension from the Meek Mill/ghostwriting fallout. Additionally, I Inadvertently had exposed to the world that Drake wanted to break free from YMCMB. I apologized, but I stood by it. At the end of the day, I told the truth about what was happening behind the scenes. ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late’ dropped on February 13, 2015, debuted at No.1, broke streaming records, and is still regarded by die-hard fans as one of Drake’s strongest projects ever. And yeah … I still think about what might’ve been if that version had come out on DatPiff with Drama hosting.

@Anonywas There’s no deadline for an artist to add a previously released single to a new body of work. 5 months later, 5 years later. It doesn’t matter. Especially when song was never given a home on an LP. J Cole released “Lights Please” in 2009 and added it to his studio debut in 2011.

What’s crazy is having another man as your pfp. Drake put the song on the very next album he released, even though it was originally included on an EP. Cardi put two singles on the very next album she released. She just didn’t release an album for five years.
