@theshahofchi @ConvoswColeman @MaxNordau “as if the entire modern information ecosystem is just a collective hallucination” I mean, it kind of is? For many years and especially since 2016 there has been massive information/disinformation.

There’s something almost impressive about saying “people think they’ve seen pictures” as if the entire modern information ecosystem is just a collective hallucination. Millions of people, journalists, aid workers, satellite imagery, but sure, it’s all just vibes I guess. No one denies the complexity of urban warfare. What people are reacting to is the scale of destruction, the civilian toll, and the policies that made it inevitable. You don’t get to wave that away with “this has never been faced before” like it’s some kind of moral exemption card. And this idea that acknowledging suffering somehow requires pretending people are confused or misinformed is lazy. You would rather argue perception than to confront what those images actually show. In other words go fuck yourself you sellout.

Sam Harris on the misinformation, disinformation, and lies that have fueled public skepticism of U.S. support for Israel. “We have people walking around with facts in their heads that are not facts…There are people who think that Israel has perpetrated a genocide in Gaza…They think there was a famine in Gaza…They believe they’ve seen pictures of this. I’m not saying there hasn’t been tremendous suffering and death in Gaza. But if, in fact, it is true that the IDF faced an urban warfare challenge of a sort that no society has ever faced…If it is, in fact, true that the IDF has been better behaved, or at least as well-behaved as Americans or Brits or any other Western power has been in anything like an analogous situation…If all of that’s true, then what are we talking about here? What is this double standard that’s being applied to Israel?”

Hatzola, set up by the local Jewish community, provides life-saving care to people of all faiths and none. It is appalling that this valued, volunteer-run ambulance service has been targeted. We must oppose hatred, and build a society where everyone can live in safety & peace.

@redhairedmonk @CuriousDaily_ @jeremycorbyn Yeah but none of them are aimed at helping one specific group. Its a good question though. Why dont they use one of the already existing private health companies? Why do they need their own?

@A70578286811 @CuriousDaily_ @jeremycorbyn It’s not necessity. It’s perfectly legal in Britain to create a subscription based service that just provides service to subscribers, the fact that this extends to everyone (even, presumably, antisemites who hate them without the slightest bit of irony) is by definition charity.

@ShineboxHukster @ConvoswColeman How does censorship “logically follow” from criticism? If I call you a dumbass, does it logically follow I want to censor you? The only solution he’s pushing for is “explain why these bad ideas are bad.” You’re assuming malicious intent to avoid addressing that.

@redhairedmonk @ConvoswColeman I said it ‘logically follows’ his critique Where’s he going w/ this indictment of independent media? What solution does he imply to resolve the failure of the free market to regulate public discourse? Do you think he believes he can persuade people to stop listening?

Sam Harris: From Joe Rogan to the “truly crazy” views of Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens, “the independent media space has been an engine of conspiracism.” And “that doesn't go well for the Jews.”

@ShineboxHukster @ConvoswColeman At no point does he say we should ban independent media spaces. Of course they’re protected by the first amendment. So is the acerbic criticism over how they’ve been used.

@ConvoswColeman Sam’s critique of ‘independent media space’ logically follows an authoritarian takeover of public discourse by arbitrary state authority. I won’t put Rogan in the same space w/ Owens & Carlson but the 1st amendment protects conspiracy theorists as much as dogmatic rationalists.

@EvanCull @chesterBirdbath @Hamza_a96 Association doesn’t require language, it requires cognition. Animals that have no language make associations constantly: rat associates a lever with food, a bird associates a predator’s shadow with danger. These are formed without sound and without anything resembling language.

@EvanCull @chesterBirdbath @Hamza_a96 Yea it is. When you point at something, you’re using your finger as a stand-in for the act of directing attention. That only works if there’s a shared understanding that one thing represents another, which is exactly what a symbol is.

@EvanCull @chesterBirdbath @Hamza_a96 The fact that you think this is a matter of English and not a matter of logic illustrates my point. You don’t do any of the homework you claim Israel should be doing, you just assert incoherent, mutually contradictory claims and get frustrated that I don’t take your word for it.

@EvanCull @chesterBirdbath @Hamza_a96 You’re trying to have it both ways - rights are “natural”, but also socially constructed. These are at cross purposes, not something you can merely assert as true without demonstrating why.

@EvanCull @chesterBirdbath @Hamza_a96 That is not what I said. You can kill in self defense and can have property taken from you to settle your debts, so clearly these are not as “inherent” as one might think. And don’t even get me started on real property. Adjacent support, riparian rights, adverse possession etc

@EvanCull @chesterBirdbath @Hamza_a96 No, it was asserted, not set out. That’s what I’m asking you to do. Natural laws, social contracts, and various Latin phrases are not true in of themselves, they have to be argued as such.

@EvanCull @chesterBirdbath @Hamza_a96 Comprehension I can do just fine. That’s how I boxed you in to an incoherent philosophical position that you can’t even elucidate. (In case you’re wondering, that’s English for explain)
