And, needless to say, plenty has been elided — there is far more to all this than trabeation, large hip or hip-and-gable roofs, thrusting eaves, and integration with the landscape. But they are a good starting point for understanding traditional Japanese architecture.

The words "Japanese architecture" are incredibly broad and could refer to hundreds of different things. Like Metabolism, an unusual and short-lived style that emerged in the late 1950s, epitomised by the now-demolished Nakagin Capsule Tower:

And that's a tour through nine centuries of art. But talking about "styles" only takes us so far, because more interesting and important than whether a painting is Baroque or Symbolist is what the way it has been painted says about the era when it was made...

Et pas par hasard ! Jan Liwacz, un forgeron polonais l'a fait exprès, pour faire chier, tout au fond du chaudron du diable il a dit "je t'emmerde". Jan a survécu à Auswitchz, il a raconté, on sait. 3/3 ⤵️

Worth repeating...
Mark Minervini@markminervini

All champions, all success stories, come from people who knew exactly what they wanted to achieve and then set themselves on a guided course to accomplish it. Maybe not initially, but once they set their intention, they went from goal setting to goal getting. They went from wanting to willing. They went for trying to find time to making time. They made their goal a priority, which is the only way a big goal gets met. This power is within each and every one of us, and it doesn’t require permission, a special talent, or a university degree. Like me, one of my personal role models, Richard Branson, only attended school until his mid-teens. Branson, battling dyslexia and struggled academically. On Branson’s last day at Stowe School, Headmaster Robert Drayson told him he would either end up in prison or become a millionaire. Drayson was proved wrong on both accounts. Branson did not go to prison, and he went on to become a billionaire. In the seventh grade, My math teacher announced that I was lazy and would never amount to anything. Years later, after reading a cover story on me, that same teacher called my office and apologized to me. I must have made some impression on this man for him to be able to recall the incident so many years later. In the case of Branson’s headmaster and my math teacher, educators, meant to teach and inspire, misunderstood our intentions and underestimated our potential and will. Becoming a real champion requires becoming a champion human being, and a champion human being finds a way, because a champion human being lives with intention, willingness and makes their dream a priority. And when a human being sets his or her intention on something, and lives that intention daily with a the willingness to do what it takes, no luck is needed... success is a certainty. What is your intention? How willing are you to do what it takes to achieve your goals? Is your dream your #1 priority? Answer those three questions and you will see your future. Love and blessings to all of my followers.

20. Craquelure The cracking that appears on the surfaces of paintings over time. Different types of paint produce different shapes and forms of craquelure; thus it is helpful for dating and authenticating works of art.

Some helpful art words... 1. Impasto A technique where paint is thickly laid on a canvas and therefore has its own physical texture. Vincent van Gogh loved to use impasto.

Still, what cannot be denied is that the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel represents a turning point in art history; nothing was ever the same again after 1st November 1512. But is it good, is it great, is it unequalled? Or is it misunderstood? Or overrated? Only you can decide...

511 years ago today the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was shown to the public for the first time. Is it the greatest achievement in the history of art, or is it overrated? To help you decide, here are some things you probably didn't know about the world's most famous ceiling...

This chart, which comes from the @wsj, is particularly striking considering that #Germany has long been considered an industrial powerhouse and the engine for Europe. Combined with the growth challenges also facing other countries, it speaks to why — in the book (“#Permacrisis”) scheduled for publication by @simonschuster in just over a month — my coauthors (Gordon Brown, Michael Spence and Reid Lidow) and I were keen to describe the characteristics of new #growth models and their sound financial and global management. #economy #EconTwitter
