Someone just stopped me in the hallway and said, "Hey, since you're here, can you help me real quick?" I said, "I'm actually about to head into a meeting, but submit a ticket and I'll grab it this afternoon." There is no meeting. I'm going to eat lunch in my car. But I learned a long time ago: if you help people in the hallway, they'll keep stopping you in the hallway. The ticketing system exists for a reason. It creates a paper trail, it prioritizes work, and most importantly, it gives me control over when I deal with things. Hallway support is chaos. Tickets are order. Also, about 30% of the time, people don't submit the ticket. Which means it wasn't actually important. They just wanted free labor while I was walking by. The person looked annoyed. I don't care. I'm not a vending machine you can just use whenever you see me. I'm a professional with a process. And that process involves me eating a burrito in my Honda Civic for the next 30 minutes.

It's such a beautiful winter morning outside, but I had to spend 20 minutes explaining to our new Marketing Director why she can't have admin rights on her laptop. She said she needs to install "design software" for her job. I told her that's a security risk and all software requests go through our Change Management process. She asked how long that takes. I said 4-6 weeks. She looked horrified. "I need Canva Pro by Friday." I paused, leaned back, and said, "I can probably expedite it... but I'll need you to sign off on the Security Exception form. It basically says if your laptop gets compromised, it's on your department's budget, not mine." There is no Security Exception form. I just didn't want to fill out the actual request. She backed down immediately. "You know what, maybe I can just use the web version." I nodded thoughtfully. "Smart call. Cloud-based is actually more secure anyway." The entire conversation took longer than it would have to just install the software. But now she thinks twice before asking me for things. IT isn't about solving problems quickly. It's about making sure people stop bringing you problems.
