I’ve been in Congress through divided governments, bitter fights, and historic crises. I’ve never seen anything like the last 24 hours. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson killed Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s bipartisan deal to fund the TSA, Coast Guard, and FEMA.  It was a deal that had the support of Senate Republicans and Democrats alike, 100-0! Why? Because Johnson places his own political survival and fealty to Trump over all else, including long waits at airports or anything else. We could have passed it in the House easily if only Johnson had allowed the vote to proceed. But instead he blew up the whole thing. Where this goes next is anyone’s guess, but what’s very clear is that Johnson is the worst and most subservient speaker in modern American history.

A bill passed the Senate last night 100-0 to fund TSA, the Coast Guard and FEMA. If Speaker Johnson called it for a vote it would pass easily. But he won’t do that. Because Trump has ordered him to keep TSA shut down and keep the chaos. Pure incompetence.

The bill brought to the floor tonight is political theater for House Republicans. Late last night, after considerable negotiations, the Senate unanimously passed a bill by voice-vote that provided funding for TSA, FEMA, the Coast Guard, and other agencies within DHS while granting time for further negotiations on reasonable safeguards to rein in ICE and CBP that protect the rights of citizens and non-citizens from abuse by DHS agents. For House Republicans to throw out that bill and pass yet another messaging bill that doesn’t stand a chance in the Senate is an insult to every DHS employee and the thousands of travelers who have been inconvenienced over the past month. For the past six weeks, TSA agents have gone without pay as Republicans and President Trump rejected several proposals from Democrats to pay our TSA agents. Hundreds have quit, and many have called out because they could not afford gas, childcare, or their bills. The resulting airport security lines stretched for hours and crippled airports across the country. What a stunning embarrassment by House Republican leadership.

When the President and his family members are financially tied to companies seeking lucrative defense contracts in an industry shaped directly by the president’s policies, the conflict is obvious. The President has a financial stake in going to war. Our service members and taxpayers foot the bill to make his family rich.
