@YungEnChee1 @HollyKirk Hi Yung - in short, yes! There are several projects within the implementation plan that address WSUD, aligning with metropolitan IWM objectives and exploring water demands, in a changing climate, if we are to meet the Living Melbourne canopy targets.

@ResilientMelb @HollyKirk Thank you for the presentation Martin—great to hear abt this work! Just wondering, does the implementation plan address the issue of how to water the planned urban forest? Will this link to the Catchment Scale Integrated Water Mgt Plan for Greater Melb which is in dev at DELWP?

@kyliesoanes Hi Kylie - protecting and increasing urban greening on private land is a key element of the strategy. There is work being undertaken to consider how to use regulations to increase urban greening in backyards

@ResilientMelb Really inspiring work. What are your thoughts on the capacity to influence actions on private land/backyards? I'm just thinking of that striking image of the veg structure lost as houses are upgraded...do we shift focus on public space? Or try and secure backyard biodiversity?

@HollyKirk The LiDAR is from Vic Gov. It was made available to all endorsing authorities. Not open source at this stage. DELWP have a very good dataset also.

@HollyKirk Holly - we have a three year implementation plan that is underway. It is a plan to 2050 but we need to really get plants to increase our canopy cover in the ground in the next 10-15yrs

@ResilientMelb Fantastic presentation Martin! This really filled me with hope for the future! 💚 #SCBMelb20 Is there an agreed timeline for getting the strategy enacted across the different LGAs? When can we expect to see things happening on the ground?

Tweet #6 Using the vegetation mapping & Birdlife Australia survey data, the likelihood of the presence or absence of selected bird species was mapped. This provides examples of how, at a regional scale, opportunities for connecting habitat might be identified #SCBMelb20

Tweet #5 The urban heat island of metro #Melbourne, the presence or absence of vegetation & several indicators of socio-economic vulnerability (e.g household income, age, rentals) were analysed. Unsurprisingly, there is a close +ve correlation between these datasets #SCBMelb20

Tweet #3 #Melbourne is rapidly growing and densifying, with its population currently at five million & projected to grow to 9 million by 2051. Urbanisation can cause the loss of permeable surfaces, canopy cover, vegetation & habitats #SCBMelb20 #urbanforest

Tweet #2 #Melbourne’s #urbanforest includes the trees, shrubs, grasses, soil & water on public & private land. It reduces urban heat islands, cools our cities, provides biodiversity & habitat & helps improve physical & mental health during acute shocks such as #COVID19 #SCBMelb20
