Tiny, microscopic organisms called phytoplankton drift through the upper layers of the ocean, and through photosynthesis, they convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and nutrients into energy; releasing oxygen as a by-product. Despite being invisible to the naked eye, these organisms are responsible for an estimated 50–70% of the Earth’s oxygen production.
