@2D0XPS @GordonFbpe @fathergarlick @MadsDavies I think the Church needs to find an algorithm to measure how much of a workload each post might be. It was dispiriting as Rural Dean to see some posts advertised that were clearly impossible for 1 person, whereas others could be a 0.5 post, but can afford more, so they get it

@2D0XPS @GordonFbpe @fathergarlick @MadsDavies One issue is that there are so many variables between parishes which impact clergy workload: open churchyards v closed, lots of readers or retired clergy v none, issues with buildings, number of schools, etc

Interesting letter in Spectator. Church health isn't limited to cities (we featured a range of parish stories at our recent growth conference incl rural multi-parish benefice). But a key bit of Chote review was the “urgent need to identify sustainable models of rural ministry”.

Great to be interviewed by CPAS as part of their training for Oversight Ministers. Looking forward to seeing how the training takes shape.

"We form friendships that sustain Christian life." 💜 Life-giving practices are central to @FideliumLondon - a lay-led community of Anglo-Catholic young adults aged 18-35 in London. How does community help you #DrawNear to God?

Went to a lovely Mass @Garlickhythe the Sunday before last. Very welcoming, good sermon, beautiful liturgy - dignified but not stuffy. Wish I was more local!

Great fun yesterday teaching the Diocesan ALM Worship & Liturgy course Part 1 & 2: Understanding Christian Worship & Traditions of Worship. A lovely group, with lots of questions, and keen to discuss. Looking forward to teaching sessions 9 & 10 later on in the term.

@2D0XPS Also, are some clergy basically opting out of ministry to children & young people because they say “I’m not equipped for that”? Is it the equivalent to saying “that’s not my thing”?

There's also a lot of overthinking about being ‘equipped’ means, which leads to paralysis. Can you share the gospel with them? Can you teach them the bible? Can you help them apply it to their lives? Can you pray with them? Let's not make this more complicated than it is.

@talkChristianly I think this is most likely to happen with a parish having a curate, where they might not have done before. This is essentially what happened to us

@revfelixsmith Yes but even stories of the clergy numbers going up within a benefice that doesn't change legally would be interesting!

@talkChristianly Speaking from my perspective, we need an equivalent miracle in the traditional catholic sector of the CofE.

We must invest in clergy training, stipends and other resources for vocations. But it has to come from a place of deep faith and conviction. Somehow a miracle must occur to break the vicious cycle and implement instead a virtuous circle.
john milbank@johnmilbank3

The answer to even catastrophically falling clergy numbers must not be to shut churches but to start to end the vicious circle whereby the merging of parishes makes priesthood unattractive, leading to falling congregations and then, inevitably, fewer vocations. @SaveTheParish

@talkChristianly @revfelixsmith I’m just wondering whether balancing the governance demands of multiple small churches, finding officers, training teams, running around like crazy is the most expedient use of clergy energy in a church where clergy numbers are about to be so significantly squeezed?

@revfelixsmith @OSacrumCorIesu X seemed to swallow a reply I thought I'd made here yesterday - which is to say I know of various places where clergy who have seen growth with say 2-5 parishes are then "rewarded" with another 3+ and it becomes much harder... and it's an expedient rather than strategic change.

@OSacrumCorIesu I agree, but as a church we need to move away from a narrative that sees growth only being possible in single parish churches. There are some Dioceses with very few single parish benefices. Outside London, apart from big HTB-style, they are quite rare. Yet, growth is possible

@revfelixsmith One of the issues, I’ve found, re building teams is that it’s tricky when people have dementia or one is working around volunteers’ hospital appointments.
