Singapore’s PM saying Southeast Asia has “put history aside” with Japan is… disgusting. It’s always easy to “move forward” when you weren’t the one invaded, butchered, or used for medical experiments. It’s always easy to forgive when your grandparents weren’t bayoneted, and your country wasn’t burned. And it’s always convenient for a small state to preach amnesia when it needs Japan as a counterweight and China as a market. But let’s be clear: History isn’t an optional side quest. It’s the foundation of the post-war order Japan now pretends to “stabilize.” China doesn’t owe Tokyo a memory wipe. And Beijing certainly doesn’t owe anyone the courtesy of swallowing provocation from a Japanese PM who can’t even handle her own domestic politics. “Putting history aside” is easy, when the history isn’t yours.
