Today I joined colleagues at the commemoration of the Czech victims of communist tyranny of 1948-1989. We gathered at Ďáblice cemetery where 248 were executed and are buried including the extraordinary Milada Horáková. Honoured to lay a wreath in their memory.

81 years ago today – on 10.6.1942 – the Nazis massacred the inhabitants of Lidice and completely demolished the small Czech village, intending to wipe it off the map for eternity. The atrocity came in retaliation for the assassination of governor Reinhard Heydrich. #Neverforget

On this day 81 years ago, 27 May 1942, Czechoslovak paratroopers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, who had been dropped from the UK into Bohemia, led one of the most daring actions of WWII, the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. Let us never forget the heroes of Operation Anthropoid.
