@ReviewsPossum Honestly, I think it's less getting an A/C and more the increased electric bill. For all the issues with our power grids (and they are legion), we still have access to a lot more electricity than even major European countries... for now, if those plans for AI come to fruition.

@ReviewsPossum Sure... we can get an AC but then it sucks up hundreds in electricity and we end up where we started. Got to be very well off for money and living to be able to afford an AC here, otherwise we have to get by with sparing usage of fans, the vast majority of us can't afford an AC

So, jokes aside, to understand why the heat is worse in the UK than say Arizona for example, the answer is quite long... First it's the Humidity, it's far higher here. The UK's island location and prevailing south-westerly winds bring moist sea air, so heatwaves are often humid rather than dry. In contrast, many of the hottest US states (e.g., Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico) have dry desert heat where sweat evaporates quickly, so you actually feel cooler despite higher temperatures. Even humid US regions (like the Southeast) usually have widespread air conditioning to offset it. Second, the buildings and Infrastructure that we have all are designed to Trap Heat, not Release It. UK homes are built for cold, damp winters: thick brick/stone walls, heavy insulation, small windows, and designs that retain warmth. During a heatwave, they turn into ovens, solar gain through windows builds up, and there is poor ventilation or passive cooling features like overhangs, shutters, or light-coloured roofs. Plus, poor air conditioning: Only about 5% of UK homes have AC (vs. ~90% in the US). It's not standard because it's rarely needed most of the year, but during spikes it's a nightmare. Also, retrofitting is expensive and tricky in old terraced houses or listed buildings. This extended to public transport, schools, offices, and even hospitals as they often lack cooling. Finally, most importantly, we have zero acclimatisation. Meaning it's just as hot at night as it is during the day. Britons aren't physiologically or culturally used to sustained heat. We're properly white! So, a sudden jump from typical UK summer temps feels extreme, and the body struggles more without gradual adaptation. Heatwaves often bring "tropical nights" (temps staying above 20 °C), so homes don't cool down overnight. You can't sleep, recover, or anything which just compounds fatigue, dehydration, etc. Drier US heat often cools significantly at night. That is all topped up with the fact that we have longer summer daylight at the UK's higher latitude meaning more hours of solar heating. Hope this long explanation that no one wanted clears this right up...

Me: Japanese coworker invites me fishing. we wake up at 4AM, illegal hour. we sit silently on tiny boat for thirty minutes. then coworker suddenly whispers: ...something is wrong. I look around, ocean normal, sky normal. Me: What. Coworker: The fish are avoiding us. he says this with absolute seriousness. then old fisherman nearby overhears us. Old fisherman: They know. Me: ...know what. both men silent now staring at water like detectives. finally coworker says: I argued with my wife before leaving. Old fisherman nods immediately. Old fisherman: Negative energy. I thought this was joke, then fisherman points at me. Old fisherman: This one is okay though. two minutes later I catch massive fish. both men stare at me in horror. Coworker quietly says: ...his heart is empty enough.

Me: lost in Tokyo at night. phone dead, no idea where I am. finally see tiny police box. officer inside looks half asleep. Officer: Problem? Me: I’m lost. Officer nods calmly, pulls out map. except this man does not use map normally. he starts drawing symbols, circles. arrows, something resembling dragon. Officer: Here is convenience store. Me: What’s there. Officer: ...parrot. pause. Me: Parrot? Officer looks deeply tired now. Officer: He steals cigarettes. I had more questions, he had clearly answered them before.

Me: at a Japanese aquarium. peaceful day, families everywhere, soft piano music. then I notice one employee SPEED WALKING past us carrying bucket. Employee: Excuse me. another employee runs by, then another. suddenly whole aquarium staff moving with Avengers-level urgency. Me: ... Friend: Something happened. we follow crowd to penguin section. absolute chaos, one penguin missing. not metaphorically, ACTUALLY escaped. staff members whispering intensely into walkie-talkies. tiny child beside me: The criminal has escaped. Me: WHY DID HE SAY IT LIKE THAT. then I spot the penguin. bro is BOOKING IT down hallway at shocking speed. sliding on stomach around corners like furry torpedo. staff chasing respectfully. one employee holding fish like hostage negotiator. Employee: Kenta please. PENGUIN'S NAME IS KENTA. Kenta ignores authority completely, runs directly into souvenir shop. now people buying keychains while rogue penguin commits grand theft atmosphere. finally old aquarium worker appears. everyone parts ways dramatically. this man kneels down calmly. pulls out single sardine. Kenta stops immediately. walks over with zero shame. Old Worker: Enough adventure. penguin allows himself to be carried away like drunk friend after party. crowd applauds. Friend whispering: He'll do it again. Honestly? absolutely.

Me: entering Japanese cat café. employee stops me immediately. Employee: One rule. Me: Okay. Employee: Orange cat bites people from France. Me: I’m not French. Employee: Good. I sit down, cats everywhere, peaceful, adorable, therapeutic. then gigantic orange cat jumps onto table, built like retired wrestler. Cat staring at me aggressively. Employee watching nervously from distance. Me: I thought he only hated French people. Employee: He improvises. cat slowly pushes my drink off table while maintaining eye contact. Me: THIS IS TARGETED. small child nearby points at cat. Child: That one evil. Employee: No no, He just passionate. cat suddenly climbs onto my lap, starts purring violently. Me: …wait he likes me? Employee shocked. Employee: Impossible. another worker comes over, then another, entire staff now observing me like chosen prophet. Manager arrives. Manager: He has never trusted customer before. Me: What does that mean. Manager bows slightly. Manager: You must take him. Me: TAKE HIM WHERE. orange cat already asleep on me. Employee quietly bringing adoption papers. Me: I CAME HERE FOR COFFEE.
