Such behaviourist approaches are problematically promoted as the answer, often by those with a vested interest, and bought into by those who hope for a fix, without proper understanding of up to date thinking and taking a rights based approach.

Here's what the Scottish Government can do to tackle the behaviour crisis: 1. Rewrite all behaviour guidance to schools 2. Remove the presumption against exclusion 3. Remove the assumption of restorative processes as the default response to misbehaviour 4. Support schools that want to use sensible sanction policies 5. Revamp teacher training to include substantial behaviour management content 6. Launch national school leadership training in behaviour systems 7. Invest in the alternative provision sector for high challenge students 8. Stop pretending violence and misbehaviour can be solved with conversations. 9. Start tracking in-school behaviour, nationally, using annual behaviour surveys.
