Two years ago, back when the nine games schedule was discussed, the SEC office came up with three potential annual opponents for each school. Historic rivalries received heavy consideration, as did a formula that analyzed every team’s record over the past decade and tried to create some parity. The conference never released or confirmed the opponents, but various outlets, reported :

Very weird to me that people are acting like week two against Arizona State is the the biggest litmus test of the season for Mississippi State. There are EASILY 7 games on the schedule that are more winnable than that one and probably 9

After listening to Hugh Freeze and John Cohen, it's abundantly clear they believe Auburn is playing by the rules and going about the new world of NIL the right way, and others aren't. August 1 will be the first day offers can be in writing. We'll see what schools' verbal offers are backed up in writing after August 1. Lot of nuances and details, but they feel comfortable with how they are approaching the entire issue.
