Thanks for sharing this paper. It’s very interesting, but the methodology it uses has substantial selection bias. The zip codes that would be expected to have the greatest negative impact on educational outcomes — urban neighborhoods with very high rates of poverty and low opportunity— are not places where military personnel would be assigned to live since they are very far from military bases.

@NotNowTooBusy They're not even highly *correlated* with zip code level SES. There's nothing overwhelming here at all.

"SAT scores just reflect zip codes" is probably dead. A new study used a sample of 760,000 military children whose families were randomly assigned to different counties/zips and found living in a +1 SD county or zip code for twenty years upped scores by just 0.05 or 0.19 d:

Good question. Here’s a short thread on the residency cap. In 1997, Congress capped the number of residency spots that Medicare would fund. This caused two problems. First, it created a bottleneck in the doctor pipeline. @Noahpinion 1/5

@PeterMoskos @VitalCityNYC How much weight would you give to the increase in arrests vs. the increase in summons?

NYC shootings are down 24% year to date. Hopefully it will continue. But why might this be? (We haven't fixed root causes.) Is NYPD is getting back into the policing gam? First 3 months, 21,725 summons in 2023 are more than 2X 9,999 in 2022. (pre-2013 it was more than 100,000)
