I had the pleasure of teaching this inspirational student, anyone who thinks that they cant become a paramedic because of a hidden disability should listen to his story bbc.co.uk/news/av-embeds…

Today is the last day I'll ever be able to say that I act for the College of Paramedics rather than the Royal College of Paramedics! I spend a good chunk of my working life with paramedics & it's an absolute privilege to work with these highly skilled, compassionate, brave, resilient & humble healthcare professionals. They do AMAZING work & put up with SO much (not least from the HCPC 😖). Sending many congratulations to @ParamedicsUK as the professional body embarks on this next phase of its journey.

Normalisation of deviance was first used after the Challenger disaster. NASA knew about O-ring issues yet allowed the Shuttle to fly Our new paper explores NASAs culture change journey including NoD. Lots of transferable lessons for healthcare staff 👇 publishing.rcseng.ac.uk/doi/epdf/10.13…

Today I helped a lost patient find their way, walking with them along this long corridor to make sure they reached the right clinic Working in a hospital, we should never forget just how intimating, scary & disorientating they can be for patients & visitors

On average we make about 5-7 mistakes every day. It’s a ‘normal’ part of being human Here’s one that happened to a colleague today who was distracted & forgot to put the lid back on his fountain pen. Think he might need a new shirt 😳 Human factors in action

Often get asked about effects of caffeine drinks (including tea & coffee) on performance We've published an easy to read, widely cited article on benefits & potential drawbacks Ideally caffeine consumption should be monitored to achieve optimal effects bjoms.com/action/showPdf…

Learnt loads preparing a paper about what healthcare could learn from NASAs culture No matter where we are or what we do on earth or in space, one thing is certain: human fallibility There are many things we can do as individuals, teams & organisations to help improve safety

@HealthRegLawyer Save that for the professional hearings, today is a day to celebrate people and if anyone gets to be an honorary Paramedic it’s you 😊

I'm privileged to spend a lot of my time working with paramedics - things I love & admire include their ability to work under [extreme] pressure, knowledge & skills, bravery, resilience, passion for the job & totally non-judgemental approach to all of us at our worst. Happy #InternationalParamedicsDay - you are amazing!
Paramedics Day@ParamedicsDay

Did you know this fun fact about paramedicine? Today, International Paramedics Day will honour and celebrate the essential role of paramedics, first responders and all those that support them.

I do wonder sometimes if it's worth sharing thoughts about my work on here, but I think this email that's come in from a paramedic gives the answer! "I know a few people who have been struck off or suspended by the HCPC and, bar 1 or 2 that were big issues, there is a common theme of thinking “I can explain this to the HCPC, it’s a simple mistake. They’ll understand, I don’t need representation” and then it snowballs. To be honest, if I hadn’t been following Andrea James on Twitter I probably would also have thought “I can just explain this to the HCPC. It’ll be fine” #FitnessToPractise

@rich_tune This actually really happened. I raised the blind with bed hair and whilst just wearing a t-shirt and he was right there on the other side of the glass and I screamed and ran away and whacked my leg off the bed and tripped as I did so. Ridiculous idiocy.

Thought about ‘Normalisation of deviance’ when seeing Discovery Space Shuttle this week Introduced after NASA accepted faults as normal resulting in tragic consequences Cutting corners, failure to engage with checklists, trolleys in corridors… a few examples we see in the NHS

Mentoring doesn’t start with knowledge. It’s start with connection. I fully commit to the first few shifts building a good relationship with my students. This progresses into trust. Then I can slowly build influence. In return they know I care & want to best for them.

Leadership in Paramedicine is not one big skill. It’s a collection of mini skills: - conflict resolution - solid communication - emotional intelligence - mentoring and support - physical & mental resilience - decision making under pressure - problem solving & critical thinking

Human factors is a huge subject ranging from systems design, how we interact with technology & factors affecting performance Here’s a paper we’ve published for cancer surgeons with areas we think are important. Also applicable to healthcare teams 👇 kwnsfk27.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F%2…
