I'm not surprised in the slightest that @Conservatives posted the lowest average council tax increase in England. And yes, you should vote Conservative on May 7th. But not because the number is the lowest. Because Conservatives delivered the lowest possible council tax increase without fiddling with reality. Let me explain. Any political party can hand you a low council tax rise by cutting services - the ones sitting on top of statutory obligations. They can use extra funding from central government to soften the blow. Or they can perform accounting miracles - delaying spend, reclassifying it, shuffling the books. All of this is fiddling with reality. Playing irresponsible games just to get a good number out and campaign on it. This is, by the way, precisely what Reform did when they came out with their number a few weeks ago. The Conservative council tax increase is the lowest - and that's a genuine achievement. But the best thing about this number is that it's real. It's the lowest possible increase delivered honestly - without gaming the figures or gutting local services. That's a serious reason to vote Conservative in May.
