BARRACK ROOM SMELLS. I bet if I blind folded you right now, you’d recognise these smells instantly. Burning Beeswax, burning kiwi polish, weapon cleaning kit. The half-eaten curry and stale kebabs left in the block over the weekend! The smell of starch and the hot iron. Over pressed barrack room trousers. Scorched shirts KF. Wet 58 Pattern webbing, I wore it 35 years ago, but I can still smell it today! Blue Stratos, Old spice, Hai Karate, Denim, Paco Rabanne, Acqua di Selva, Tabac, Insignia. The wet woolly pulleys (heavy wool) drying over a radiator. Those three pairs of issued green army dogs (socks) that I took to last me three weeks in Sennyfridge. That unmistakable smell from the Guard room. When the Prisoner is polishing the floors using layer after layer of that minging orange floor polish 0400 HRS Umpteen smelly socks after a 24-hour stag.
