You don't really need to convict Sara Duterte to end her political career. Don't believe me? Look at how her defense team is trying desperately to prevent the impeachment trial from ever starting.
As we gear up for the impeachment trial, with the first official trial date likely set late June or early July, there's concern among the anti-Duterte that there is insufficient votes to convict Sara Duterte. This is the wrong way of looking at things.
For example, in his political commentaries and recollections of the 2012 impeachment trial trial, former presidential political adviser Ronald Llamas noted that when the Senate impeachment court hearings first started, the Aquino administration could only reliably count on fewer than five certain votes to convict Chief Justice Renato Corona. The vast majority of the 23 senator judges were completely uncommitted, highly skeptical of the House of Representatives' "rushed" articles of impeachment, or openly hostile to what they perceived as executive overreach by the Palace.
But as Llamas points out, impeachment is fundamentally a "question of numbers" and a political act. The administration did not secure the final 20 votes until the trial evolved. A massive shift occurred only after the prosecution subpoenaed Corona's actual dollar and peso bank accounts, which created overwhelming public pressure that the remaining senator judges could no longer ignore. Further, the Philippine constitution gives the presidency powerful tools of state which can be used for political purposes to pressure or reward senators to vote the right way - as he hinted the Aquino administration did in 2012.
Further still, even in the event Sara Duterte is acquitted, the chances are she'll be politically broken after this. In the Philippine political landscape, an impeachment trial functions less like a strictly legal court and more like a televised, high-stakes war of attrition. Even if a trial fails to end in a legal conviction, the grueling process itself acts as a political "meat grinder" that can permanently destroy a leader's popularity.
The impeachment trial of President Joseph Estrada in the Senate lasted an average of 3-5 hours per day. The impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona typically also typically lasted between 3-5 hours per day, though sessions were sometimes extended late into the evening during the final weeks of the proceedings. Think about it. For 3-5 hours every single day, the public is subjected to a constant loop of negative allegations, complex legal jargon, and dramatic cross-examinations - live for all to watch on TV and to listen on the radio.
Now imagine this effect but multiplied several times over with the Internet now on everyone's finger tips. Even with her millions poured into PR, they can't hide the filth and horrors Sara Duterte has hidden in her closet. The trial process forces open vaults that are usually sealed tightly by Philippine law; such as bank secrets, hidden assets, and private ledgers. In a country with high poverty rates, the daily, highly visual exposure of unexplained, massive wealth alienates the leader's core masses and severely tanks their populist appeal.
Even if a viewer does not understand the technicalities of law, the sheer volume of daily bad press creates a psychological "guilty until proven innocent" mindset among the electorate.
This is Death by a Thousand. This is political attrition as Ronald Llamas so eloquently explains and this is why the Duterte camp is desperately trying to put a stop this trial from ever starting. They know it's a meat grinder and they know deep in their hearts that it's an ordeal that Sara Duterte can't survive.

Senator Loren Legarda teared up while Senator Pia Cayetano turned emotional at the Senate on Wednesday, as she recalled the shooting incident last week.
“I just want to make this quick statement. ‘Parang walang nangyari,’ ‘yan po ang statement ng ating butihing senadora Risa Hontiveros. Siguro po para sa inyong mga wala dito, pero para sa amin na andito, napakaraming nangyari. Takot na takot po ako na kailangan ko na magpaalam sa mga anak ko,” Cayetano said, addressing a remark by Senator Risa Hontiveros. (Photos by Ryan Baldemor/The Philippine STAR)
