शायद अलकनंदा नदी कुछ समय बाद विलुप्त हो जाए, तो हमें आश्चर्य नहीं होगा। श्रीनगर गढ़वाल में अलकनंदा की जो हालत हो चुकी है, वह बेहद दुखद और चिंताजनक है। अवैध खनन ने नदी के अस्तित्व पर ही सवाल खड़े कर दिए हैं। दिन-रात जेसीबी और ट्रकों ने लगातार खुदाई कर नदी को भीतर से खोखला कर दिया है। जहाँ कभी जल की अविरल धारा बहती थी, आज वहाँ सूखी रेत और गड्ढे दिखाई देते हैं। नदी का प्राकृतिक स्वरूप पूरी तरह नष्ट किया जा रहा है। इससे पर्यावरण संतुलन, जलस्तर और जैव विविधता पर गहरा असर पड़ रहा है। स्थानीय लोगों की आजीविका और भविष्य भी खतरे में है। हैरानी की बात यह है कि राज्य सरकार और उसके अधिकारी पूरी तरह मौन हैं। सब जानते हैं कि यह चुप्पी किसके हित में है। नियमों की खुलेआम धज्जियाँ उड़ाई जा रही हैं, लेकिन कोई कार्रवाई नहीं हो रही। यह सरकार की नाकामी और उदासीनता को साफ दर्शाता है। प्राकृतिक संसाधनों का यह दोहन किसी भी कीमत पर स्वीकार्य नहीं है। अब हर जागरूक नागरिक का सामूहिक कर्तव्य है कि वह आवाज़ उठाए और सरकार को जवाबदेह बनाए।
