also in this discussion a lot of people are invoking "assimilation" and not cultural diffusion, and that's where the disdain is coming from. truly if it was just assimilation people would be picking up "standard" english or SAE over AAE.

i think there's certain cultural contexts required to know what certain words and grammatical processes needed to fully understand AAE/Ebonics. ie i think a lot of non-AAs are fluent in AAVE, but not AAE/Ebonics

was talking to oomf abt this but largely agree that regional aave has influences from immigrant populations (undeniably), but AAVE doesn't "come naturally", it's a language and has to be learned, nobody can start speaking aave without hearing aae even if their language is similar

rather than argue that the descendants of immigrants learn ebonics from black americans, i'd rather point out that 1) depending on their native languages it actually comes naturally to them because it already makes sense 2) black immigrants have helped shaped ebonics
