The Yankees could possibly have the best starting rotation, maybe ever?
Realistically, picking him up could strengthen the pen by forcing Weathers/Warren into the pen for a LR role that would remove Blackburn and/or Yarbrough. If not that, something would be worked out.

Rival executives believe the bidding for Tarik Skubal at the deadline will come down to the Dodgers, Yankees, Padres, and Blue Jays. (Per @BNightengale)

@PippaGary This is devastating news Gary. I'll always cherish the Fusco-Dragone matches I made at the County Center. I truly liked Kenny. So sad. RIP

I’ll say this first, Bednar’s curveball left over the center of the zone is inexcusable and he needs to be better.
But, life as a Yankee closer is probably the most impossible job to live up to in baseball.
With a fanbase and probably an org that constantly compares you to the best closer of all time, you’re expected to be the definition of consistency and excellence in a position that is the most volatile in the sport.
Relievers by nature have steep periods of being good and bad, that’s why they’re relievers. There’s one (maybe two) actual closers in baseball that could possibly provide better results in the short-term than Bednar, but you have to consider this:
- The Yankees fanbase and org ran Aroldis Chapman out of town. He’s within the Top 10 in Saves all time, and will finish within the Top 5 maybe this year. He’s had a 1.05 ERA and 42 Saves with Boston over the last 2 years.
- The Yankees also had MULTIPLE previous closers as members of their bullpen in 2025, including the consensus “best closer in baseball” (Devin Williams) and two of them were run out of town, including Luke Weaver who’s career the Yankees literally rejuvenated. Doval is also currently outside the circle of trust.
- Clay Holmes was run out of town, after posting an all-star season in the role in 2024 and a 2.69 ERA (154 ERA+) for the Yankees over four years as the defense let him down multiple times to prompt multiple blown saves. Now he’s a starter for the Mets, with a 3.26 ERA and accruing value no one thought possible. (I hope his leg heals soon.)
So let’s say the Yankees make a move at the deadline. How long before the vicious cycle continues because that closer IS NOT MO? I’d wager to say it wouldn’t take very long, no matter who they are. Miller, Duran, etc, doesn’t matter. They’re not the best closer of all time.
Will the fans and organization ever understand what an actual “good” closer is in the current era of baseball? Probably not. But it’s something to keep in mind.
