A true leader does not treat employees as disposable and fire them in bad times. There are many alternatives to lay offs. Companies can reduce costs without layoffs by first freezing hiring, not replacing people who leave, cutting contractors, consultants, travel, and other non-core expenses, and redeploying employees into areas where demand is stronger. They can also reduce work hours, use temporary furloughs, introduce pay cuts with senior management taking the hit first, and invest in reskilling staff so existing employees can handle new roles. Some firms also use voluntary retirement or separation schemes and shut weak projects or business lines instead of making broad workforce cuts
