15/ To summarize, from a legal and political perspective, this law is not an arbitrary or authoritarian ban on religious groups. Instead, it focuses on identifying and retracting the legal entities of religious groups with ties to Russia through a legal process. From an institutional perspective, the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations has endorsed this approach. From a public opinion perspective, most Ukrainians appear to support the idea of banning churches with affiliations to Russia. The risk of polarization and social cleavages is not significant, as people generally do not express strong concerns, and the Moscow Patriarchate lacks the capacity to rally significant support. From the supply side, Ukraine is religiously diverse, and people do not feel deprived of religious freedom—they can choose a group that aligns with their preferences. Therefore, there are no serious reasons to expect rallies or protests. In my view, this measure is not about faith but about ensuring security during the war. It aligns with the expectations of all major stakeholders and follows thorough legal procedures. I do not think that words as "authoritarian," "anti-freedom of religion," or "polarising" are suitable here.

12/ Yet, the Ukrainian state has never really managed to fully control or overpower churches. Why? Too many diverse churches, too many strong ties with regional elites, to many local histories. Also, little governmental capacity to monitor and regulate. Despite some attempts, no president or political power has ever managed to dominate the religious landscape. So when I hear narratives about an evil authoritarian state banning religious groups, I can't help but roll my eyes. It's just not realistic in the Ukrainian context.

When this is Figure 1 of your paper you know that you have a killer paper. "All fields, EXCEPT FOR ECONOMICS, exhibit a low and decreasing concentration, which suggests a trend toward decentralized knowledge production." conference.nber.org/conf_papers/f2…

@LearnWithBishal I would add the Wendover production channel to this list. The channel makes a deep dive into various economics and logistics topics.

Over the past 3 years, I've watched over 10,000 videos on Youtube. And the truth is, 94% of them were a complete waste of time. But these 8 channels are worth more than a 4-year degree: 🧵

3. On the technification: Levitt claims we are likely (he is "very pessimistic" about the future of economics) to go the way of anthropology and sociology towards irrelevance. I don't think that is going to happen. With some exceptions, economics did not take the ideological turn of other social sciences-- it has remained refreshingly, old fashionedly, positivist. People have research questions, develop hypothesis, find data, do analysis. True, sometimes the tools take too much precedence. But with so much new data, and so many smart minds, there is always new terrain, new questions, new answers. I see a dynamic, exciting field. 8/n

Some reactions to the (wonderful) Levitt interview. 1) On the @uchicago PhD program and the atmosphere in the department in the 90s (toxic?). 2) On Price Theory and its future at @uchicago and beyond. 3) On the "technification" of economics and the blurring of the "theory-empirics" boundaries. @indigoglow_ I’m doing a PhD, have a full-time job, and I’m also a young parent. When my supervisors told me to run some regressions in my free time - I laughed. PS I truly love my supervisors, and I’m incredibly blessed to have them guiding me.

@SteveWechslerPT @AcademicChatter In a month or so, it’ll be the anniversary of my submission with the status: “sent to reviewers,” with no reviewers accepting the submission for review 🎉

Manuscript rejected after 3 months because the journal couldn’t find ONE single reviewer. I hear this is an increasingly common issue across journals. Academics, if we’re not supporting each other to move our fields forward, what are we even doing? @AcademicChatter

Цікаво, швидко відповідати на повідомлення - це добра навичка чи ні? Як деякі люди вміють не відповідати на повідомлення тижнями (я не говорю про тих, хто на фронті)?
