@pomekka_ Being totally honest, the only flat-out evil characters in modern continuity I can think of are like... the Beast Clan leaders, Zanmu, Junko, and like... maybe Seija and Seiga??? But they're not really spreading harm, just weirdly curious losers.

I'm so glad Zun is a normal guy, he just likes drawing women, not his dream waifus, and Touhou is not his waifu wish-fulfilled fantasy land. It's just a universe for him to tell funny stories in.

This is true AND it has layers to it.
The amount of stuff is overwhelming AND the premise and ZUN's art style is a hard sell AND people expect the usual tropes that come with Japanese media (none in touhou) AND if you mention that you like touhou they'll assume that you're a p3do

And this upsets me bc touhou since then has grown so special and genuinely deep and explores really interesting themes, but it keeps getting buried under 20 years worth of U.N. Owen Was Her remixes, 5 cargo ships of Cirno fumos and 300.000 SDM doujins. (10/10)

In conclusion, EoSD is popular because it's straightforward and it and its fanworks appeal to general anime fan audiences.
Touhou, which found its identity after EoSD, does not (which is what makes it special), but fans wish it did and pretend that it does (9/10)

I don't think anything that ZUN makes is bad per se but EoSD has a lot of baggage on top of not being interesting or good technically and narratively, which is why I don't like it very much. (1/10)
