For those who have read my book, you know my first season coaching youth football was 2014
As this graph shows, the impact I have had on this country over the last decade is truly profound and a national success story, not a “tragedy”

Reading scores, 3rd graders to 8th graders, 2015 to 2025. This is a national tragedy.

Canada has had a longer continuous, unbroken period of monarchical government than any of England, Scotland or Northern Ireland. This is due to the Interregnum of 1649-1660, at which time Canada was part of New France.

@E_W_Price @_kruptos The Canadian nationalist myth is about anti-American exceptionalism. We are better than Americans because we are governed by responsible, socially minded, technocrats embedded in the global order. This is what makes Canadian nationalist’s hearts stir.
English

I’ll believe carney is a nationalist when he starts exiting treaties that don’t benefit Canadians (refugee, undrip, climate). Also tough to be a nationalist for only part of the country and exclude the most economically productive part. The gap to fill is that of a nationalist elite that serves the interests of all Canadians over global interests. That’s not carney so far.
English

The problem with this strategy is that the CPC is seen as too “American” (ie red American) and the Liberals have been able to cast themselves as guardians of the essence of what it means to be “Canadian.”
Wyatt Claypool@wyatt_claypool
The “Cultural Conservative” campaign to try and replace Pierre Poilievre is going to get underway this summer and fall. “Cultural Conservative” is the new labelling of the Red Tories because they aren’t fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, or freedom conservatives.
English

@E_W_Price @_kruptos Carney is creating a nationalist movement that central Canadians, of all stripes, can support. The western bloc, which is an anti-nationalist movement that happens to control the CPC, will continue to oppose the nationalists.
English

@_kruptos But, you are correct that the Liberals view themselves and, with the exception of JT (which is part of the reason for his unpopularity) have been viewed by Canadians as the guardians of the essence of Canada. Of course,, “essence of Canada,” is defined by central Canada.
English

@_kruptos No. It means the Liberals are the nationalist party. Which they have been since the Second World War. In Canada, nationalism means identifying with the values of central Canada. Something the Liberals use to project power to protect the economic interests of central Canada.
English

@MattZeitlin The nationalist base is also concentrated in central Canada, so it privileges the economic needs of central Canada through technocratic mechanisms while vigorously waving the flag.
English

@MattZeitlin Of course it does. It’s a straight up nationalist party in a country where the nationalist base also desires technocracy.

Great video from last night’s “Russia’s Shadow War” on the linked threats posed by Moscow to Ukrainians and Iranians. Great work @FarFar61, @cactusandtryzub, and our 3 favorite front-line Ukrainian veterans.
