One of the most satisfying “prescriptions” I ever wrote was for a program that matched dogs in need of homes to patients with cancer, but required a doctor’s signature Lots of confounders here, of course, but I can heartily endorse the companionship of man’s best friend

Thank you @johnforutah for sponsoring this important bill amending requirements for insurance preauthorization No oncologist is asking for carte blanche to prescribe irrationally But cancer doesn't wait, so neither should our patients when they need treatment delivered urgently

Today one of my breast cancer patients was placed under general anesthesia before I had seen her, marked her, or signed her chart. That should never happen. This is not the first time I have walked into a hospital and found that the rules were treated like suggestions. Surgery is not an assembly line. These are human beings. They deserve to be seen, evaluated, marked, and spoken to before anesthesia is administered. When I asked for an explanation, I was met with defensiveness instead of accountability. And here is the deeper issue. I am often told by insurance companies where I am allowed to operate. Even when I know that another facility is safer. Even when patterns like this have already occurred. Physicians should be able to choose the safest environment for their patients. Insurance contracts should not override safety standards. I am tired. But I am not going to be quiet. We have to build a system where surgeons can vote with their feet and take patients where protocols are followed and safety comes first. Our patients deserve better.

Anti competitive practices are harming patients in Austin right now and I am asking Congress for help. Insurance companies decide where my patients are permitted to have surgery. They have refused to recognize my surgery center @redbudsurgerycenter as in network, even though it is fully certified by CMS, meets all safety standards, and is often a safer environment for complex cancer surgeries. My ask to Congress is simple. Allow doctors and patients to choose where surgery is performed. Pre existing arrangements that force care into specific facilities are anti competitive and not in the best interest of patients. This week my breast cancer patients needed surgery and were unable to receive care because of insurance. Cancer does not wait. If we want to talk about cracking down on insurance company practices, this is the place to start. What you can do right now: - Call your insurance company and ask for Redbud Surgery Center to be considered in network so we can take care of our patients. -Call your member of Congress and ask them to require insurance companies to allow doctors and patients to choose the facility where care is delivered, especially when patient safety is at risk. This is how change starts 💪

#Puppies fostered in MD. These dogs did t sell at the breeder so they were sent to a live dog auction. Google it. It’s horrible. A retired veterinarian saves her $ and buys whatever dogs she can afford. These dogs are #lucky stop the greed. #adoptdontshop #boxerdogs #puppiesofx

On behalf of the Society of Utah Medical Oncology speaking to legislators about reforming the prior authorization process, which needs as much timeliness & transparency as access to the medical record itself — patients deserve to know when & why their meds are denied vs. approved
