The Great Plague
During the reign of Charles IV, Germany was struck by a terrible plague. This was the Great Plague, which swept across all of Europe like the Angel of Death and killed millions of people.
Entire towns died out, and large areas of land became empty and deserted. Germany lost half of its population. At that time, medical knowledge was very basic, and there was nothing doctors could do to stop the disease. Whether the dead were buried in the church or outside it made no difference.
The sight of so much suffering drove people away from their normal lives. Some threw themselves into wild parties and pleasures to forget the terror of death. Others tried to calm God’s anger through painful acts of self-punishment.
Large groups of people called Flagellants moved from town to town. They wore only rough shirts, threw themselves down in front of altars, and whipped themselves until they bled. Even children joined these crazy brotherhoods. Both the Church and the state had to pass strict laws against them.
In some places, people believed the Jews had caused the disease by poisoning the wells, and a terrible persecution of Jews began.
The memory of this terrible time still lives on today in the so-called Dance of Death pictures, which show Death visiting people from all walks of life. The most famous painting of this kind is by Hans Holbein and can be found in Basel.

During the reign of the weak Emperor Frederick III, great disorder reigned in the land. Even the highest princes of the empire were not safe from robber raids. One example of this kind is the so-called "Prince Robbery"
Kunz von Kaufungen, a daring knight from Thuringia, had seized many estates for himself. The Elector of Saxony, Frederick the Gentle, demanded their return, but in vain.
Kunz was then subdued by force of arms and swore revenge.
In the year 1455, the Elector had traveled to Leipzig with most of his courtiers, leaving the Electress behind with the young princes and only a few servants.
Kunz took advantage of this opportunity for his dark scheme. He attacked the castle in the dead of night with several knights and abducted the princely boys. Fast horses carried the robbers along different roads into the distant countryside.
But the abduction did not remain hidden for long. Alarm bells rang throughout the land, calling on the people to pursue and capture the criminals.
Kunz was overpowered and bound by brave charcoal burners in a deep forest.
Prince Albert, who was in his hands, thus regained his freedom. When the other robber knights heard that Kunz had been captured, they were so terrified that they immediately released the older prince, Ernest.
It is after these two princes that the two lines of the Saxon house are still named today: the Ernestine and the Albertine branches."
