Applebaum: The war with Iran was clearly a war of choice. Israel had proposed this kind of action to previous US presidents, and they declined. They understood the immediate danger to international shipping and especially to the oil and gas industries. 1/

"It's not just a security issue - it's also a moral issue. While Ukrainians are dying, Russians are spending their holidays in Europe. " - Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro called on EU countries to tighten their visa policy toward Russian citizens. "A very troubling sign is that the number of visas issued to Russians in Europe is growing, which is ridiculous. Because it's not just a security issue - it's also a moral issue. While Ukrainians are dying, Russians are spending their holidays in Europe. It's just not logical at all. The non-binding measures have produced non-binding results, and it just can't continue like this. I think there should be a ban on tourist visas for Russians, at least for as long as this war continues, because Russians are traveling as if nothing has happened. And that's exactly what the Kremlin wants Russians to believe: 'It's okay, it's just a small special operation, it's not a big deal, and we can carry on with business as usual.' So we have to squeeze Russia really hard."

Greece has obstructed Western sanctions on Russia from the start. If you're interested in this, @econ_harris and I have written a series of @BrookingsInst pieces on this topic. This piece traces where Russia's shadow fleet came from. It came from Greece... brookings.edu/articles/where…

‼️‼️🇷🇺🇨🇳 BREAKING | Beijing has just delivered a stunning geopolitical betrayal to Moscow—plunging a dagger directly into Putin’s desperate pivot to Asia by freezing the Kremlin's crown jewel energy project. According to explosive reports from the Wall Street Journal, China has indefinitely suspended all negotiations with Russia regarding the construction of the massive "Power of Siberia-2" gas pipeline. The pipeline was designed to reroute hundreds of billions of cubic meters of natural gas originally bound for Europe directly into Chinese markets, serving as Moscow's primary economic hope to replace lost Western revenues. By halting the multi-billion-dollar project indefinitely, Beijing has signaled that it refuses to bail out Russia's collapsing energy economy on Putin’s terms. This freeze represents a catastrophic strategic defeat for Russia, exposing the brutal reality of its asymmetric dependence on Beijing. With Europe permanently locked out and China walking away from the negotiating table, Russia’s massive gas reserves are effectively trapped in the ground with nowhere to go. This move proves that China views Russia not as an equal strategic partner, but as a vulnerable, junior partner to be exploited, leaving the Kremlin's long-term economic survival in absolute tatters. Greece has thrown a spanner into the works of fresh EU sanctions by demanding a tailor-made exemption to a full ban on Russian LNG. Member states are aghast at the request, with one diplomat calling it "shameless".

🇬🇷🇪🇺 The entire EU wants to punish Russia and one Greek billionaire won't let them. Greece is single-handedly freezing the new sanctions package, demanding a carve-out from the 2027 Russian LNG ban so its tankers can keep shipping Moscow's gas straight to China. Why is Athens burning political capital over this? Follow the ships. It all traces back to Dynagas, owned by billionaire George Prokopiou, whose fleet of Arctic icebreakers is locked into Russia's Yamal gas project. The day that ban hits, those specialized ships turn into floating scrap metal. So Athens is quietly going to war for one man's fleet, and the rest of the bloc is fuming. One EU diplomat summed up the mood in a single word: "shameless." And here's the part that stings the most. While Brussels sits stuck in this fight, the deadlock has also stalled the Russian oil price cap review, handing Putin the exact windfall these sanctions were built to choke off.

❗ Mykhailo Fedorov was asked about corruption: Which corrupt officials or companies were involved in his dismissal? Here is his full response: 📌 From day one, we introduced a new procurement system based on data. Previously, the General Staff would provide a list of companies and products that had to be purchased. We decided instead to buy from the top 10 highest-quality companies in each category. As a result, 80% of drones are now purchased from the best manufacturers because there had been a lot of low-quality equipment reaching the front. The remaining 20% are procured through competitive tenders. 📌 The second step was launching open tenders. We started with 155 mm artillery shells. One company opposed holding a tender but eventually participated—and reduced the price of each shell by $1,000. We saved more than $100 million on artillery alone. After that, we launched a tender for 160,000 medium-strike drones. Fifty-nine companies submitted bids. That is our competitive advantage. We expect savings of 20–30%. If the budget exceeds 20 billion hryvnias, then saving 20% means billions that can be invested elsewhere. 📌 We also halted a large number of contracts that had been signed directly between certain Ukrainian companies and foreign suppliers. I wasn't even aware of many of them when I took office. In a sense, we disrupted some companies' business strategies, but how could I justify buying shells we already had in surplus when we faced shortages of other types? We tried to launch as many competitive tenders as possible for both deep-strike and FPV drones, because they generate significant savings while allowing companies to compete in an open market. 📌 There is, in fact, a great deal of corruption. Some department heads within the Ministry of Defense had effectively been appointed by private companies. These were officials who would not even attend ministry meetings without representatives of certain law enforcement agencies accompanying them. We began dismissing them, one after another. There was one case involving a proposed direct contract with a specific company. We received a letter from the Bureau of Economic Security (BEB) stating that the company's profit margin was 200–300%. It belonged to a well-known individual who does not live in Ukraine. After discussions with the General Staff, we removed that company from consideration. However, everything said during that meeting somehow became known across the entire market. We conducted polygraph tests and identified those responsible. ❗ There were many stories like this. We had only begun changing the system at its core. These reforms will save budget funds, allowing Ukraine to continue fighting and spend money on what the military actually needs.

Fedorov: Zelenskyy said he wouldn’t replace Syrskyi, I accepted that. I would have learned to work with him because we answer to the Ukrainian people. But our initiatives were blocked. Syrskyi avoided discussing problems, and chose intrigue and media blame. He issued an ultimatum. He found a way to divide the country instead of defeating Russia. 1/

It has been a great honor to serve the Ukrainian people as the Minister of Defense. Here is what our team managed to achieve: 1. Disabled Starlink access for Russian forces. 2. Took over a Ministry of Defense with zero budget, took a risk, reallocated funds from payroll from the end of the year, and effectively invested them in mid-strike capabilities, fiber-optic FPVs, low-cost reconnaissance, ground robotic platforms, interceptor drones, and deep-strike drones. 3. Launched "Logistical Lockdown", this cut off enemy logistics and initiated the isolation of Crimea. 4. Continued the funding program for the Drone Line. 5. Launched a support program for modern drone-assault units that rely primarily on advanced technologies in combat. 6. Introduced a 70% advance payment policy for procurements made via e-Points on the Brave1 Market portal. 7. Fundamentally overhauled the procurement system. 8. Procured thousands of pickup trucks, buggies, and ATVs for the military for the first time—and did so through open tenders. 9. The drone interception rate rose from 83% to 91%, and the cruise missile interception rate soared from 47% to 87%. 10. Contracted Patriot PAC-2 GEM-T missiles for the first time, and submitted an application through an EU loan to purchase PAC-3 missiles. 11. Launched a baseline drone supply system for brigades and corps. 12. Launched a massive grant program for manufacturers of explosives and missiles. 13. Initiated an unpopular but vital transformation of the military. 14. Conducted three UDCG meetings, where we successfully broke through the Russian information trap claiming our defeat, restoring partners' faith in Ukraine. This secured $40 billion in support announced for this year (excluding the EU loan). 15. Launched the mechanism to utilize the EU loan for our military priorities. 16. Found a way to scale cheap missiles against jet-powered Shaheds and signed a record-breaking contract. 17. Our domestic ballistics. We radically revised the technical specifications, maximized accuracy, and reduced the cost by 30%. 18. Signed a contract to procure Gripen fighter jets. 19. Collaborated with the military to plan and execute Operation Auchan, which halted the enemy's mechanized offensive for six months. 20. Opened up exports under the Drone Deal program to attract investment and scale up domestic defense-industrial complex (OPK) production. 21. Launched the Trophy Lab, providing partners with the opportunity to study captured Russian military technologies. 22. Launched the Defense AI Center A1 to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence on the battlefield. Thank you to my entire team for their relentless 24/7 service. A special thank you to my family for their patience. Thank you all for your support! I will continue to work toward the mission I originally brought to the Ministry of Defense: defeating the enemy through asymmetry, the speed of innovation, and the power of organization. To be continued.
