How baby boomers got so rich & why their kids are unlikely to catch up: “It’s astonishing how their relative wealth has taken off in the last 30-plus years. They started out as among the poorest groups in terms of wealth back in 1983” washingtonpost.com/business/2025/…

🤔 so is this good or bad?

The paper I’ve been most obsessed with lately is finally out: nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news…! Check out this beautiful plot: it shows how much LLMs distort human writing when making edits, compared to how humans would revise the same content. We take a dataset of human-written essays from 2021, before the release of ChatGPT. We compare how people revise draft v1 -> v2 given expert feedback, with how an LLM revises the same v1 given the same feedback. This enables a counterfactual comparison: how much does the LLM alter the essay compared to what the human was originally intending to write? We find LLMs consistently induce massive distortions, even changing the actual meaning and conclusions argued for.

🚨: After 48 years of travel, NASA 's Voyager 1 is nearing one light-day from Earth, almost 16 billion miles away. A proud milestone for humanity, and a humbling reminder of how small we are in an infinite universe.

However, this scatter plot shows the share of homes with access to internet *only* through cellular data plans. Notice how in the majority of #Indiana counties, this share increased (to the right of the orange line). In other words, the decline of homes with no internet is thanks in part to homes relying only on cellular data. This of course, is not ideal, due to something called "data limits". 3/3

Up first, the share of households with no internet access. Any #Indiana counties to the left of the orange line mean their share of households with no internet access *decreased* between 2017 & 2024. This share decreased across ALL counties. This is certainly good news! 2/3

A colleague and I crunched some numbers back in 2018 to understand the impact that #remotework had on median household income. Results indicated that indeed, remote workers had a positive impact on income. Who would have known that two years later the COVID-19 pandemic would validate these findings. #RegionalDevelopment

Due to #AI shifting from training to inference, @nvidia may be impacted. "Nvidia became the first $4 trillion company by selling the silicon equivalent of fast, powerful and expensive Ferrari sports cars, but now the world wants Priuses and Model Ys." wsj.com/tech/ai/can-nv… via @WSJ

Nice interactive graphs! Previously posted about this study. Spoiler: women will be impacted the most. See which jobs are most threatened by AI, and who may be able to adapt wapo.st/4cP2ZHM

The 2024 Digital Divide Index was published earlier last month. It is built on nine variables that provide community residents/leaders information on where to focus their efforts: infrastructure/adoption or digital literacy. One of the variables is the internet income ratio or IIR. This measures the gap between lower-income households without internet versus higher-income households. #DidYouKnow that three counties had an IIR larger than 100? Meaning that the share of lower income households without internet was 100x higher compared to their higher income counterparts? Bacon County, Georgia (IIR = 405) Tyrrell County, North Carolina (IIR = 114) Culberson County, Texas (IIR = 112) Learn more at pcrd.purdue.edu/ddi

@wadhwa And do you think innovation will no longer rely entirely on geographic proximity?

It isn't going to be long before humans start doing this to themselves. As I wrote in my book Driver in the Driverless Car, with rapidly falling costs of gene sequencing, CRISPR editing, AI and biotechnology tools will move genetic engineering out of elite laboratories and into homes and small startups. As these tools become as accessible as PCs did, ordinary people will begin experimenting with biology themselves, creating a world of amateur geneticists and biohackers. This will accelerate innovation and raise new ethical and safety challenges.
