Now, the state legislature is considering a bill that would mandate reading instruction rooted in phonics, called "the science of reading," in every early grade public school classroom.
The school districts of Los Angeles and Lancaster have zoomed ahead of that mandate.

In the '90s, a reading strategy called “balanced literacy” took over CA public schools. It wasn't based in the science behind how kids learn to read, and the results have been dreadful.
Last year, more than half of 3rd graders—57%—couldn't read at grade-level on the state test.

LATimes confirms 115 journalists laid off, or about 23 percent; newsroom will be at approx 385.
NOTE: Taken in combination with last year's layoffs, the Los Angeles Times has laid off about one third of its newsroom in less than a year.

Diamond Bakery, an emblem of Jewish pride on Fairfax for 76 years, closed earlier this month. Considering all the foot traffic there it's depressing more people didn't support it.
