Hoogstraat in 1932 & Now The Hoogstraat is the oldest street of Rotterdam, built upon the original dam in the River Rotte. It is literally the dam in Rotter-dam. This is where Rotterdam was born and for centuries it was the city’s main corridor for commerce, hosting not only shopping, but cafes, hotels, churches, and theaters as well. After it was largely destroyed in 1940, Wederopbouw (Reconstruction) planners sought to create an entirely new commercial center to the west: the Lijnbaan shopping center. While the western end of Hoogstraat bordering the new Beursplein received some attention, the eastern end—where these photos were taken—was treated as an afterthought and not developed until the later 1950s. Together with the rest of Rotterdam’s historical core (the area around the Laurenskerk, Grotemarkt, Oude Haven), it was mostly relegated to low-grade blocks and parking lots at the time. Absolutely zero attention was paid to its historical significance or its role in the foundation of the city — a situation which largely continues to this day.
