According to Sony's website, the PlayStation 2 sold 155 million units. According to Jim Ryan, the console sold 160 million units. Believe it or not, the final sales figure for the PS2 has been a hotly debated topic since 2013. But what's the actual final number? Join me as i relitigate old forum debates from a decade ago about PS2 sales so that console warriors can finally feel good about themselves or something, i dunno. Sony Website: According to Sony's official business data & sales page, the PlayStation 2 sold more than 155.0 million units as of March 31, 2012. sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company… PS2 discontinuation: However, the PlayStation 2 was still in production until January 2013, which is nine months after the final reported sales figure of 155.0 million. theguardian.com/technology/201… Combined PS2 + PS3 shipments: Sony confirmed that it had indeed shipped more PS2 units between April -December 2012, but it never said how many. Instead it combined PS2 + PS3 units and said there were 16.5 million units sold between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013. sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR… Sony also stated that hardware unit sales of PlayStation 3 had declined YoY, from 13.9m in the prior year. Therefore, we now have an absolute minimum of 2.6 million PS2's shipped during that period (16.5m - 13.9m). PS3 final total: Sony had previously reported PS3 quarterly sales figures through to March 31, 2012, which had reached 63.9 million. web.archive.org/web/2012102021… Sony then reported that PS3 shipments reached 70 million as of November 4, 2012. web.archive.org/web/2014021311… Sony then reported that PS3 shipments reached 80 million as of November 2, 2013. We also have quarterly figures for PS3 shipments of 1.1m and 2.0m for the quarters ending Jun 2013 and Sep 2013, respectively. web.archive.org/web/2014021000… The PS3's final total reported by Sony was more than 87.4 million as of March 31, 2017. sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company… PS2 calculations: Using some back of the napkin math, and knowing that PS3 must be lower than 80m prior to the end of the Sep 2013 quarter, we can calculate 79.9m - 63.9m - 1.1m - 2.0m = 12.9m. This is the theoretical maximum for the PS3 in the year ending March 31, 2012. We can then do 16.5m - 12.9m = 3.6m to obtain a theoretical minimum for the PS2 for that same period. We can also calculate a theoretical maximum of 6.8m in that period for the PS2 too. Therefore, we now have a range of 155.0m + 3.6m to 6.8m for a total of 158.6m - 161.8m. One other point of note is that Sony mentioned that PS3 and PSP unit sales were down in FY2012, but it doesn't mention PS2 sales being down, which may mean we can increase our theoretical minimum to 4.1m, which is what PS2 sold in FY2011, and thus 159.1m in total. Jim Ryan podcast: On the official PlayStation podcast, Jim Ryan said that "160 million, which is the number of PS2s that we sold" was a milestone for Sony. blog.playstation.com/2024/03/29/off… While this is as close as a final figure we'll ever get from Sony, it's also hard to say how much this has been rounded and whether Jim Ryan recalled the correct figure. So ultimately we're left with a theoretical range of 158.6m - 161.8m from Sony's public data and 160m from Jim Ryan. In summary: Who cares lmao. Go enjoy your weekend or something. Also, here's IGN quoting one of my posts from 2018 saying the same thing: ign.com/articles/plays…

Here's how it compares to revenue culturecrave.co

this is why the Xbox full screen experience feels like a beta. These issues are small, but they all add up to a buggy experience that feels like it shipped too early
