@yoavgo Example presentation?, practice reading/presenting of a shorter text? it could also be shorter and just have the logistics, but then it could make more sense to share them before in text/video etc., depending on the whether students actually look at it..

@robvanderg no no, you are right, the first lecture does not have student presentation. but the question is, what *does* it include, beyond presenting the topic, the list of potential papers, and the logistics?

cs/ml/ai profs: do you have tips for not wasting the first class of a seminar course on purely logistics ("these are the topics, these are the papers, here is how the course works, who will present next week and what")? (this year we were graced by end of class being interrupted by incoming missile alert from Iran, but hopefully future years will be different)

@yoavgo Ah I was somehow assuming the first lecture doesn't have a students presentation. Are the logistics still important then?, if the first group already prepared their presentation it sounds too late anyways?

@robvanderg but in a seminar course, based on students presenting papers. what do you do in the first session which is not the practicalities?

📄Identifying Open Challenges in Language Identification 👥 @robvanderg 🎯 We identify and quantify a variety of challenges for language classification and identify cross-domain evaluation as a main bottleneck, where n-gram based models outperform transformer-based LMs.
