Five years ago my father was diagnosed with severe cancer. His doctor thought the situation was hopeless. He said my father had only 3 years left to live. My father didn't give up. He went into hospital for a full suite of treatments on our wonderful NHS. At the hospital, the surgeons who operated on him were from Somalia and Uganda. The nurses were from Iraq, Ethiopia and Jamaica. The consultants were from Egypt, Syria and Pakistan. Whenever I went to visit him, the hospital was a wonderful, vibrant, intoxicating mix of cultures from all over the world. The air was redolent of curry and garlic and spices. People conducted lively conversations in 20 different languages. Sometimes staff and patients would dance together, chanting and whirling round, while doctors played traditional indigenous drums. He died after 4 weeks from septicaemia but I believe he lived more in those 4 weeks than in the whole rest of his life.
