Today is the last day of coal powered electricity in Denmark. Block 3 at the Esbjerg plant will close down today. At its peak it used 500.000 tonnes per year, emitting 1,2 million tonnes of CO2 yearly. A good day for the climate 😊

As it looks like we will head over 2C this February, it is worth revisiting the most important science paper of the century: academic.oup.com/oocc/article/3… 2 November 2023 @DrJamesEHansen et al "global warming will exceed 1.5°C in the 2020s and 2°C before 2050" Leading to the most important quote of the century at the end of the paper: "Young people have the opportunity to provide the drive for a revolutionary third party that restores democratic ideals while developing the technical knowledge that is needed to navigate the stormy sea that their world is setting out upon." Dear young people - come on the next zoom call to hear about how to create this Revolution: Sunday 17 March 2024 7pm GMT us02web.zoom.us/meeting/regist…

@Aaron__Orlando Such a great question. Off the top of my head on a Friday when my brain is tired: - GDP per ton of C02e - income equity - and some keystone species or similar local environmental health measurement

Um. Hello? Media? Politicians? Celebrities? Oprah? The latest global temperature that was just posted by Copernicus (data from Feb. 9) was 2.03°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline.

16 We don't need new technologies: we have everything we need to scale-up climate action. We just need to deploy existing technologies faster and on a larger scale, while continuing to decrease their costs

The UN released a "global stocktake" taking a hard look at the state of our planet In short, we are still sleepwalking to a world we will increasingly not recognize It has 17 key findings which I've tried to translate into non-UN speak THREAD

"Climate change is reducing the amount of carbon the trees fix and likely has cascading effects on how much carbon they can provide to their ectomycorrhizal fungi," This is a huge deal. We lose the fungi, we lose the forests. We lose it all. phys.org/news/2023-09-t…

Back in 1985, Carl Sagan told Congress that continuing to burn fossil fuels will increase global temperature, cause climate change, melt glaciers and ice sheets, and cause sea level rise. His solution: Fewer government subsidies for fossil fuels and use of renewable energy.

Another broken record, now from the past: Ice sheet retreat of 600 meter per day. Bad news for the next decades at current rate of warming. "There’s evidence of sea level increasing at a rate of up to 50 cm per decade during episodes of rapid ice sheet disintegration." “This is not a model. This is real data. And it is frankly scary, even to me. These data should keep us awake at night.”

So, Cdn Oil Sands co's are paying Google so if someone searches federal climate policy or climate change they get industry misinformation @PathwaysNetZero and these same company emissions are single largest reason Canada can't meet our climate targets?! 🤦‍♀️ desmog.com/2023/04/05/oil…

The US sold 918,000 new EV last year, representing new annual electricity demand of about 3.67 TWh. Yet the US also created 96 TWh of fresh electricity last year entirely from new wind+solar. Our clean power growth swamps new EV demand. More in tomorrow's @TheGregorLetter
