1) Here I argue: At this critical time when nuclear-armed adversaries expand their arsenals with impunity, pressuring democratic U.S. allies for merely debating security options to support Washington reveals the logical weakness and irony of the nonproliferation orthodoxy.

I contributed to @ISDP_Sweden with my thoughts on ongoing nuclear debates among key US allies. isdp.eu/encourage-secu…

2026 Asan Institute polls on Koreans' views on neighbor countries show some interesting results: - Favorability of Japan has risen sharply in recent years, recording all time high with a rating of 5.11 - Takaichi is the most liked foreign leader currently and is also the most liked Japanese PM in the last ten years - Support for indigenous nuclear program has reached an all time high at 80% (63% support even if international sanctions were placed at 52% support even if USFK withdrew as a result) - Korean public opinion remains still much more positive of the US than China

Encourage security debates in South Korea and Japan. Key allies are not proliferation risks.

🇯🇵🇰🇷 Prof. John Mearsheimer says the Iran war just taught Japan and South Korea one lesson: "You’d better have your own nuclear deterrent." Japan already has 44 tonnes of plutonium sitting in the UK and France. South Korea watched the U.S. pull THAAD from its soil to fight a war it wasn't consulted on. This is almost certainly already being discussed in Tokyo and Seoul. @clashreport

🇺🇸🇮🇷 As a U.S. warship crossed the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said the U.S. is “starting to clear it” as a favor to the world. All while both sides sit in Pakistan trying to hold a fragile two-week ceasefire. Talk about sending a message.

3) Another notable fact is that South Koreans do not see indigenous nuclear deterrence as a means of decoupling with the United States. Strong support for the ROK-US alliance remains unchanged in the poll. Koreans now do not separate nukes and alliance. asaninst.org/bbs/board.php?…

2) It’s notable that support for indigenous nuclear armament reached an all-time high of 80%. Even when presented with potential costs—international sanctions (63%), withdrawal of USFK (52.2%), or domestic infrastructure burdens (54.1%)—support remained above majority thresholds.

1) According to @asaninst poll in 2026, stronger nuclear deterrence rose on multiple fronts. Even as there was a 10% increase in confidence in the U.S. extended deterrence (59%), a record 80% (2025: 76.2%) of South Koreans supported acquiring indigenous nuclear weapons.
