For those who don’t understand why the prices at the pump are increasing, here is a quick breakdown. We drill more crude than almost any country. We’re a net exporter — we sell more oil and fuel overall than we buy. Sounds like energy independence, but it’s not and no matter how much we drill it still won’t be. Here’s the part most people miss: The oil we produce is mostly light, sweet crude — thin, clean stuff that’s great for gasoline. Our big refineries (the plants that turn crude into gas for your car, diesel for trucks, jet fuel for planes) were built decades ago to run on heavy, thick crude from Canada and the Middle East. That heavy oil lets them squeeze out more of the products we actually need. So we end up exporting a lot of our American light oil overseas… and importing heavier foreign oil to feed the refineries. We can’t fully use our own oil the way we should. We’re still tied to global markets and foreign crude even while drilling like crazy. Oil companies make money on the arbitrage, but regular Americans pay the price with volatility and less true independence. The light-vs-heavy mismatch is real. Drill baby drill is just a stupid concept because it changes nothing. Updating refineries to better match what we produce with what we use at home would help leverage American oil more effectively. But of course the simple answer is never the right answer when it comes to geopolitics.

I’m paying close to $300 a tank to run my truck. And that’s not including gas for farm activity. I have a farm. I can’t haul any livestock ANYWHERE. Neither can my neighbors who have cattle. One of them sold all his cattle and he’s out of the business. I know many farmers who grow hay, wheat, pumpkin, corn, cattle and they’re going under. People do not understand how much trouble we are in as a country.
