Last June, Pixar released a movie called Elio. It cost $150 million to make and earned $35 million on opening weekend, the worst debut in the studio's 30-year history. A year earlier, the sequel Inside Out 2 made $1.69 billion. Toy Story 5 was greenlit between those two numbers.
Every original movie Pixar has released since the pandemic has lost money or skipped theaters. Onward opened in March 2020 and earned $141 million worldwide. The pandemic shut theaters down days after release. Soul, Luca, and Turning Red bypassed cinemas in favor of Disney+ as the company chased streaming subscribers. Lightyear earned $226 million on a $200 million budget, a loss once you add $100 million in marketing. Elemental dragged itself to $496 million because audiences kept telling friends to see it. Elio collapsed at $152 million globally.
Sequels have a different track record. Every Pixar film that has ever crossed a billion dollars is a sequel: Finding Dory, Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, Incredibles 2, and Inside Out 2. The Toy Story franchise alone has earned roughly $2.9 billion across four films since 1995. Inside Out 2 hit the billion mark in 19 days, the fastest ever for an animated movie.
While the originals were failing, Pixar was cutting staff. In May 2024 the studio laid off 175 people, 14% of its workforce and the largest single round of cuts in its history. Another 75 had been let go a year earlier. The layoffs were part of Disney CEO Bob Iger's plan to strip $7.5 billion from the company's annual costs.
On a Disney earnings call, Iger told Wall Street that Disney is "swinging back a bit to lean on sequels" because sequels "take less in terms of marketing." Familiar characters still pack theaters. Pixar's last original to crack $500 million was Coco in 2017.
So Toy Story 5 was greenlit, with Andrew Stanton (who wrote all four previous films) directing. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return as Woody and Buzz. Bonnie is now eight years old and obsessed with a frog-shaped smart tablet called Lilypad that the toys have to outwit. Six months from release, 56% of moviegoers already say they know the film is coming, more than double the typical awareness for an animated movie at that point.
Disney needs Pixar to keep producing billion-dollar movies. One shelf in the entire studio reliably prints that number. Toy Story 5 is what the spreadsheet decided.

If confidence won back world titles, Maxwell Jacob Friedman would have no issue defeating AEW World Champion Darby Allin at upcoming pay-per-view event “Double or Nothing.” But even in a non-legitimate sports competition like professional wrestling, personality alone can only carry one so far. The good news is MJF can handle himself on the mat about as well as he can on the mic. bit.ly/4f8B7Q3

Bloodsport (1988) having a low critic score never matched the movie’s actual legacy. Van Damme doing full splits, the Kumite fights, Bolo Yeung stealing scenes every five minutes. That movie absolutely knew what people came to see.
