I was a BJP beat reporter when Narendra Modi was the organisational general secretary. He maintained close relations with sections of the media, including major southern networks like Asianet and Sun TV. Then came the Kutch earthquake. Keshubhai Patel’s government failed badly in relief and rehabilitation. Advani, then the final word in BJP politics, sent Modi to Ahmedabad. Modi understood that he could do little and that the BJP might lose the state. Then came Godhra. What followed were the Gujarat riots that killed thousands. I was in Ahmedabad then, along with journalists from different parts of the world. Today, V. D. Satheesan compares himself to Modi.
