For the twitter anipal community ... #DogsofTwitter, et al ... time seemed to stop when we got the terrible news. Shock, disbelief, grief, and then an absolutely overwhelming avalanche of love poured out in this place where, outside of our community, love seems to be hard to find. It is a testament to the power that a huge heart residing in a little dog in a corner of the internet can have. Unlikely as it would seem, Penny had that kind of power. The world was, and is, a better place for her having been in it. #CanadianPenny

Mom here: The silence in our house is deafening... but the love from Twitter/X is loud. Thank you for loving #CanadianPenny so much. All of the tributes: posts, DMs, photos, artwork, donations, flowers and beautiful words - thank you, it means more than you know ❤️

@CanadianPenny1 I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Sending sincerest condolences and virtual hugs. May your sweet Penny rest in heaven. 🙏🙏

@annatheenigma @Trupanion Beautifully stated. 🥰

When Charlee trotted into our lives, she brought with her a kind of joy only a dog can deliver, unfiltered, unconditional, and full of tail-wagging love. She was only seven when our world shifted. A diagnosis we never saw coming: mitral valve disease and her heart was failing. The prognosis was devastating, only six months to two years, and came with four, twice-daily medications, constant vet visits, and unpredictable ER runs became our new normal. Every moment with her became sacred.
There was one hope, a complex surgery that could repair her failing heart. But the cost was staggering. I was staring down a decision no pet parent should ever have to make: her life or a bearing a financial burden that felt impossible.
That’s when Trupanion stepped in, not just as an insurance provider, but as a lifeline. They didn’t just cover the surgery, they stood with us through every step: the ER visits, the medications, the follow-ups. They gave us the freedom to focus on Charlee, not the bills. They gave us more quality time. They gave us hope.
As we fought for Charlee’s life, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of the past pressing in. I had already lost two beloved dogs to heart disease, both sudden, both cruel. Their absence isn’t just felt, it’s etched into every decision I made for Charlee. I refused to let history repeat itself. I had already lost too much, and I was only able to do this with the help of Trupanion.
And yet, this fight wasn’t just about Charlee. It was about me, too. I’ve been given the gift of life, twice. As a two-time cancer survivor, I know what it means to battle for every heartbeat, every breath, every tomorrow. My dogs were there through it all, offering comfort when my body was weak and my spirit was tired. They were my healers and my companions. So when Charlee needed me, I knew I had to be her strength, just as they had been mine.
Today, Charlee is thriving. Her heart is strong. Her spirit is unstoppable. She’s back to playing with her brother, going on walks, curling up beside us, and reminding us daily of the miracle we were given.
For me, this wasn’t just about saving a dog. It was about honoring the ones I lost. It was about fighting for the best care, not just for Charlee, but for every life that deserves a second chance.
Trupanion didn’t just save Charlee’s life. They saved mine. And in doing so, they gave us back a piece of our hearts.
From a survivor, a fighter, and a dog mom who knows the true cost of love - thank you, Trupanion, you made what felt like the impossible possible. You gave us the gift of time and life, and I will forever be grateful. Click on my referral link to learn more about protecting your pet with Trupanion:

I had a great visit with my Charlee today, I took her favorite chicken treats and laid on the floor with her for about 45 minutes for lovies 🥰
4 days up and at ‘em after open-heart surgery, she’s a baddie like her mama 💕
We’re not out of the woods yet, but being able to lay with her on the floor in a room versus the looking at her through an oxygen cage made my mama heart happy ❤️🩹

English

@pug_rosie @annatheenigma Ditto!

Visited my baby in the ICU, she is currently getting supplemental oxygen due to her protein levels being low from some bleeding.
She did get up and wag her tail when I was at the oxygen cage, surgeon said that’s a good sign.
Keep the prayers coming, this is a critical time and my mama heart is not well. 🙏

English

@annatheenigma If you can't get ur hands on that, how bout a double shot of Woodford's double oak??? 😉🥃😉
English

@annatheenigma Prayers are still headed your way........ 🙏

My Charlee is out of surgery and in ICU - all of her vitals are great! 🙏🙌🥹❤️🩹
Her heart started right up from bypass with no issues and was in worse condition than the echo showed, both sides of the valve were prolapsed with substantial regurgitation. They did 11 sutures and an angioplasty.
She has a bit of internal bleeding in her chest which they believe is venous and not arterial so she needed a blood and plasma transfusion, which is a common risk and at this time they are observing closely and someone will be with her around the clock.
She’ll stay in the ICU tonight, and I should get an update tomorrow late morning as to stats. Thank you all for your continued prayers, the next 24 hours are critical so keep them coming 🙏🙏🙏🙏
English

@annatheenigma May this sweet lil babe be their bestest patient yet. Not gonna lie, reading this has my tummy in knots too, tho, chihuahua mom to chihuahua mom. 🙏

Just left my a piece of my heart in the head cardiac surgeon, Dr. Matsurra’s gentle and loving hands at University of Florida for pre-surgery tests and prep her mitral valve surgery. You can tell just how much he loves dogs.
Surgery will be all day tomorrow, she will be dog number 70 to have this surgery in the US.
We met with both surgeons, the lead technician, and a social worker (yes, you get your own social worker who will be there if needed.
UFL only does one open-heart surgery a week so they get one-on-one care around the clock for the duration of their stay (6-7 days).
My tummy is in knots but I just have to keep telling myself I’m giving her the best chance I can for an improved quality of life 🙏

English

@annatheenigma Sweet baby. You got this!!! 🙏
English

Just got an update: all pre-surgery tests are as expected. Heart is a bit more enlarged and a bit more regurgitation than her last echo, which is expected, just the progression of the disease, labs look great.
Makes me so sad leaving her in a strange place with people she doesn’t know, but she is in the best of hands. 🙏

English

@annatheenigma I was thinking her surgery was the 28th. Thank goodness I logged in and saw the updates. Prayers and love and comforting virtual hugs are headed your way!
