One of Super League's biggest issues re: young stars is the salary cap. Clubs that produce young talent (Wigan, Saints, Leeds, Warrington in recent years - there are others too) are consistently inhibited by the fact they can only pay them 30k under age of 21 before they go on the cap. So they under-pay them what they're worth. For context, that means you can earn more as a 22-year-old making coffees or working on a building site than playing elite sport. That is fundamentally flawed as a system for a supposed 'top tier' sport. Until the sport recognises it needs to reward clubs who produce the stars of tomorrow, not hinder them, young talent will leave. They'll go to other sports, the NRL or just walk away from the game altogether. And if you reward those clubs with further cap dispensation to appropriately remunerate young talent, it will prompt others to up their game in talent development AND keep the best ones in Super League.
